Consistent commander unit behavior for indirect weapon units
Describe the feature you'd like
Allow units with indirect weapons (Mini Rocket Arrays, Mortars, etc.) to function similarly to direct fire units when assigned to a commander (such as returning to commanders after repairing, receiving commander experience buffs, etc.) As of now, indirect fire units assigned to a commander act similarly as if they were assigned to a sensor. They follow from a distance, are unassigned from the commander when retreating and only fire on a target if the commander is stationary. They also don't occupy slots in the commander's unit limit as seen below.
Describe why do you think it is needed Making indirect fire units behave like normal units when assigned to commanders would make them much more usable with commanders, and open many more strategies involving both commanders and indirect fire units.
Interesting idea and I like it as well. But what if instead of adjusting the Commanders functionality with indirect fire units, we adjusted the Sensor turret to be more Commander-like?
- Give Sensor turret experience/levels like the CommandTurret. # of attachable units depend on level.
- Add same 'Retreat at X damage' functionality to Sensor Turret as well.
- ... Basically the SensorTurret becomes the CommandTurret for Indirect Fire...
Maybe we could do that, or maybe we could do both. Honestly, all I've really wanted is to assign Mini Rocket Arrays to my commanders.
I'm against the idea to make the sensor more Commander-like. A sensor is a sensor and a Commander is a Commander. All the abilities of the Commander result of the Command Relay Center and there is no Center for the sensor. It would make the Commander less special.
So I looked into that, and the fact that artillery doesn't count into group limit is actually intentional (maybe not a surprise for you, just discovered that myself). When assigned to commander artillery receives FIRESUPPORT
order, not a COMMANDSUPPORT
, as such artillery isn't part of commander's group, and doesn't benefit from Commander's bonuses
Exactly, and in this feature request, I'm asking that artillery units are treated as any other combat unit when attached to a commander. I think it would open up more possible strategies when using commanders, especially with artillery units that can fire and move, such as the MRA.
