Suggestion: Change default light mode to Gruvbox Light

Open CouchTomato87 opened this issue 1 month ago • 2 comments

One of the most common negative feedback I've heard from Japanese users is that the site looks too plain or unwelcoming and also that they don't like dark mode. I've noticed Japanese site designs tend to be more colorful, but perhaps we can go with some middle ground?

In chess, the most dominant color palette is simply black and white. The use of white and black themes really matches well with that. In fact, if you see someone wearing clothing with checkered white and black patterns, you immediately think chess, right?

Well in Shogi, there's no white and black. It's light brown. So my suggestion is to have the Gruvbox Light theme be the default, both for site and the "Light mode":

Meanwhile, the current light mode could be renamed "Gruvbox white" or something. I think this would make the site look just a bit more refreshing.

In conjunction with the logo discussion, we could also have the new logo follow this color scheme as well for the favicon:

I was feeling similarly and I was hoping adding the custom themes would result in this being brought up. As for the default I added 'system theme' for the next update, which defaults to either light/dark based on user system theme, I would kinda like to keep that behavior. Maybe we could change both dark and light theme to something more refreshing.

I think Nord

and Gruvbox (which I've been using) are good substitutes for a default dark theme as well:

Gruvbox being a good complement to Gruvbox Light.

The one that looks like 寺 is also not bad and basically looks like dark theme but slightly less black.

This is a relatively big change from users' point of view. On one hand I like having different color palette from lichess, but there is also the users' familiarity or brand association that we will lose. I will probably change light theme to use the same colors as gruvbox-light, with some tweaks. For the dark theme I like gruvbox dark, I use the theme everywhere, but here it seems a bit too sharp or contrasty, makes me squint a little, I will try making some tweaks.

I think a slight desaturation of the brightest yellow (perhaps even on gruvbox “light”) should work wonders

I'm a big fan of gruvbox material https://github.com/sainnhe/gruvbox-material it's similar to gruvbox but with softer colors

Is there a representative image? I didn't see one in that link

Ohh, I'm an idiot. I just needed to read the "click below" haha. Thanks!

I agree, it looks better than original Gruvbox.

Current color scheme:

Attempt with colors from gruvbox mix material hard:

Some things to consider.

  1. Not the biggest fan of font color change (white -> black) on hover with accent colors, seems distracting:

Image

It's necessary so that the text is visible on it tho, we would have to find different colors if we want to preserve white color font on hover as well... But we also need the accent color to be visible on dark background...

  1. Top gradient, keep it or not? Current theme has small gradient at the top of the page, custom themes don't.

current with gradient -> new without:

The current theme is kinda boring, but kind to the eyes. New theme looks good now, but novelty will wear off. So I'm not sure if I wanna go ahead with this. Maybe adding it as an alternative for now (once it's ready) and having a vote later.

Try replacing the highlight color with #883b34... The font color won't change there at least.

I think the main goal would've been to replace the light theme, which I think was more lacking than the dark theem at least.

And I would prefer the gradient (keeps it consistent with lichess at least)

EDIT: Also if you want, I can shoot a quick poll to the Shogi Harbour people too to expedite things.

That works for the font color, but hard to read on dark background (PRESETS text). Also red is used for 'bad' or 'wrong' things.

I think I will add an option to switch to the new theme in the next update. Let's do a poll then, when it's possible to try it out.

Gotcha -- was thinking if there were to be a site makeover, it would happen by the time of next update or so, which would coincide with the closure of ShogiClub24. That's why I've been posting a bunch of ideas lately -- to prepare for a possible influx of Japanese users (I think we might be seeing some already as Lishogi's been a bit more busy with strong anon users)
