Rating ranks
This means mapping ELO to ranks like: ..., 一級, 初段, ... (in eng: .., 1-kyu, 1-Dan, ...). Ranks will be different for each rating category (rapid, correspondence, individual variants, etc. see https://github.com/WandererXII/lishogi/issues/955 for possible reduction in rating categories), ranks will be awarded only after player's rating is stable. Two things need to be decided:
1. ELO mapping values
This can be easily tweaked later if needed, but it would be good to start somewhere reasonable. Let me know, if your current rating is where you think it should be. This table will be update based on feedback, for now it's a starting point:

2. UI design
What is going to be more important to display ELO or Ranks? Some ideas here, ignore what ELO is mapped to what here. Most examples here will show rankings in English, but if your language is set to Japanese ranks will be shown in Japanese.
a. Current state - ELO only, for comparison to see what is to be changed:
b. Show ranks as primary and elo as secondary - for example on hover (that's the floating rectangle in the second pic - cursor not shown in screenshot) or when enough space present
c. Show ranks as secondary and ELO as primary, in some places do not show it at all

d. Repurpose official titles in front of username (currently utilized by 4 people) for ranks
We could have different colors for different ranks - not sure about that, using only the gold prob looks cleaner, but you can see it in the second pic.
Personally I like d. - Using titles for ranks. It makes ranks stand out, but keeps elo display everywhere else where we might need it. Official titles would then be showed in hovered tooltips and on users page. OR we could also use the different colors only for users with official titles, either different color rank, or different color online status (circle or patron wings).
I think B or D is a good improvement over the current site. I'd like to point out that kyu ranks in Japanese should use Arabic numerals instead of kanji for the number part.
I like option B. Colors would be neat (possibly groups of colors, like 81Dojo does), but I think it looks nicer to have name first and rank second in its own column. I haven't met any shogi players that talk about ELO; they always use kyu-dan rank.
FYI... I don't know why this is the case, but on other sites for kyu ranks, I've only seen arabic numerals, not kanji numerals.

I made it up. 1650 as 1-Dan and went from there... Just as a starting point to get the discussion started. This can be easily changed later, with merged rating categories we will also have better data to see how the distribution looks.

So half-width arabic numerals in Japanese and lowercase K for kyu ranks in english. And Japanese kanji numbers in Japanese and uppercase D for Dan ranks in english, somewhere I also see lowercase d... 2-kyu 2級 2-Dan 二段
Yeah half and half. Btw I'm 1750 in 81dojo which is +2dan and I'm also around +1700 in lishogi but I haven't played rated in lishogi for a couple years. So maybe 1dan going all the way to 1700 might be too much. Here's 81dojo's mapping https://81dojo.com/documents/Rating_System#Rank_Thresholds
i'm 1315 in rapid on lishogi, which is the time control in which i have the highest rating, and i'm 9kyu on 81dojo
I think there should be a survey to help map ranks better @WandererXII . I myself am ~1750 in Rapid and 3-Dan on 81Dojo.

And since D got most votes, I went with that - so ranks will replace titles in front of usernames.
