I explained it multiple of times since Catalina that Apple simply broke a lot of stuff in screensaver API under the Cloak of feigned security and never fixed it neither in Big Sur nor in Monterey.

Let just speak a developer of another screensaver for macOS. https://github.com/JohnCoates/Aerial/issues/1217#issuecomment-1016804757

Try this: Open a Finder window, press CMD+Shift+G, and paste:

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.ScreenSaver.Engine.legacyScreenSaver/Data/Library/Preferences/ByHost

(Drag your .gif files in there and then use it as the path.)

cmd+shift+g is a folder finder??

In fact, I move the gif to the ~/ (i.e. the home), and it works. (M1, Monterey 12.3)

ok so what i did to fix it was change the location of the gif by clicking on it and sending it to home(cmd+shift+h) then i selected the gif and it worked
