When Wordpress sends an email it always waits for the email server to confirm the mail has been sent before moving on. Lets take Contact Form 7 as an example: The user needs to wait before he gets a confirmation like "email has been sent". This message could be shown right after the form was filled and the email gets sent in the background.

This is a major feature that's needed in my opinion. All user-triggered actions should complete as fast as possible and email sending is slow (sadly) resulting in a sub-optimal user experience.
