Nodes Server offline/outdated

Open Luensche opened this issue 4 years ago • 1 comments

Hello,

after missing my own node in the list I found out, that the last refresh was on 12.06.2019 - 20:30:04 UTC. After looking in the code, I know now, that the two nodes server are not working anymore. The first gives outdated information and the second isn't reachable any more.

It would be nice if this can be fixed soon. Maybe a option to add custom servers in the settings is helpful as well.

The first source was added after i had to take mine (the second one) offline (see here for more details) and I never took the time to fix the second one. Fixing the second one would not fix this issue anyway as long as the first one still responds.

I first thought I would just quickly add a new source. I started improving the NodeLocationConverter and added a Github Action to regulary generate new location files. But now I doubt that continuing setting up a new host and updating the app with the new source is even worth the effort.

I do not think that this app has many users anymore (it probably never had anyway), seeing that nobody else noticed that the nodes were not updated for almost a year. I myself have neither used it nor worked on it in the last 2.5 years. Seeing that newer Android versions will automatically notify the user if a public wifi is available, I think adding all freifunk ssids to the system is not that useful anymore. As for displaying nearby freifunk acceess points, there are better apps available that are still actively maintained, like Freifunk-Karte for example.

Even if there is still some demand for an app like Freifunk Auto Connect, I think it would be the best to just write a new one from scratch, seeing how much Android development has changed over the last few years. But at the moment I have neither time nor motivation to do that.

I will add a note to the readme that this app is no longer maintained.
