delete the config files. (MapWriter.cfg, MapWriterBlockColourOverrides.txt, MapWriterBlockColours.txt) see if there is a error in the logs relating to mapwriter

looks like map breaks down what the second mod...I'll look for it find the mod, send the log and the mod name..

Any updates on this? I've got the same problem and can confirm it isn't a compatibility issue with NotEnoughIDs (don't have it installed). Not sure if it's stuck in underground mode because my underground mode seems to work fine. Normal mode was drawing over my old map with black, effectively erasing it as I moved around.

Tried reinstalling the mod, removing the config files and putting them back in the new installation, as well as removing and replacing the mapwriter folder in the world's save folder. Then used M then R to regenerate, which adds a few green pixels in the black space being drawn over the pre-existing map when on an island in the middle of an ocean. That got it to render grass it seems, at least.
