Hi, sorry for the sudden message. I'm a Japanese user and I'd love to help with the Botania ja_jp translation for version 1.21.1, if possible. I do have a few questions before I start:

  1. Is there a designated place where discussion about translation work for this mod takes place? If so, I would prefer to share any future feedback or suggestions there.

  2. It seems that even the en_us.json content differs slightly between versions like 1.20.x and 1.21.1. Should I be making version-specific adjustments to the translations accordingly?

  3. Lastly, are there any important guidelines or things I should be aware of when contributing to the Botania translation?

Thank you very much for your time!

Unfortunately we don't have any specific place for discussing translations. Feel free to join the Discord and check to see if anyone else speaks Japanese there.

For now I would recommend targeting 1.20.1 for your translations, as the 1.21 version is in no way stable or finished. More translations might get added, or maybe something goes away before it ever gets released.

As for things to be aware of:

  • Botania is full of references. For example, all advancement names are Vocaloid songs, and many flower names are combinations of an actual flower and something related to the flowers function. You can find more about those two things, specifically, in omake.md.
  • It's probably a good idea to keep the entries in the same order (and with the same empty lines as separation) as in en_us.json to be able to easily update the translation later based on diffs of the English language file.
  • If you have any questions about the usage or meaning of any particular entry, feel free to ask in the Discord.

And thank you for considering to donate your time for this.

Hello. I've been working on the translation recently, and a few questions have come up during the process, so I'd like to ask them here if that's alright.

Before I begin, please note that some of these questions refer to the key names in the lang.json file. Thank you for your understanding.

・May I continue to ask questions here in the future as well?
I have joined the Discord server, but I wasn’t sure where to post questions like these. (My Discord name is “tbdpeace.”)

・This might be a bug, but for "botaniamisc.conversionChanceBiome" (used in JEI etc.), the biome name always appears as "Sparse Jungle", and it doesn't seem to change regardless of context. Is this intentional?

・Where is "botaniamisc.floatingPrefix" used in-game?

・If possible, could you briefly explain where each "botaniamisc" key is used?
It would be very helpful, as long as it doesn’t become too much work or too long to list.

・I have two questions about "botania.tater":

  1. How can I trigger lines like "Don't talk to me or my son ever again." in-game?
  2. Regarding the parody of "That's Not My Name", would it be acceptable to use a parody of a different song instead? I'm unsure which song might be appropriate if so.

・About the page order, especially in sections like "botania.page.flowers":
Why is the page order structured the way it is?
Was it rearranged at some point due to the addition of new entries or updates?

・This is slightly off-topic, but regarding the Patchouli Japanese translation PR—do you know why it hasn’t been merged?
There are both open and closed PRs, but I personally think the one submitted by knumatakaki (with just the change from $ to %) should be accepted.
What’s your opinion on that?

・For "botania.page.dandelifeon10", is the following understanding correct?
“Cells within the range of two or more Dandelifeons will die, but if the flowers are placed at an appropriate distance (by default, more than 25×2 blocks apart), they can pass cells across their boundary—though some mana will be lost during the transition.”

・What exactly is the behavior described in "botania.page.elfGear2"?

・Finally, in "botania.page.pistonRelay1", what does the term "frame" refer to in this context?

Thank you very much for your time, and I apologize for the number of questions. I really appreciate your work, and I’m trying to ensure the translation is as consistent and accurate as possible.

The channel name in the Violet Moon Discord is #botania_engineering.

・This might be a bug, but for "botaniamisc.conversionChanceBiome" (used in JEI etc.), the biome name always appears as "Sparse Jungle", and it doesn't seem to change regardless of context. Is this intentional?

Whenever you see a %s (sometimes a %d) in the entry, that will be replaced by something else and needs to be present in your translation. In the case of botaniamisc.conversionChanceBiome, the first one is replaced by the output of botaniamisc.conversionRatio, and the second one by the player's current biome name.

・Where is "botaniamisc.floatingPrefix" used in-game?

I don't think that one is currently being used. Sometimes the way display strings are constructed change, often because the approach isn't particularly easy to translate. As far as I can tell, botaniamisc.floatingPrefix used to be the way to construct the names of floating flowers. It worked in English, because that language doesn't change its adjectives to match the noun's genus.

・If possible, could you briefly explain where each "botaniamisc" key is used? It would be very helpful, as long as it doesn’t become too much work or too long to list.

I'm not sure if there's a "brief" way to do that. Also, some of these aren't actually used anymore. The ones that are used often show up individually as system messages, captions, or tooltip text. If there's a number at the end of the translation key, those strings are usually displayed at the same time and merely represent multiple lines of text. (The numbered tater texts are displayed with a delay between the lines. The "filterN" messages are the pickup modes for the Hopperhock.)

The "Don't talk to me…" lines happen when you place a Tiny Potato and give it another Tiny Potato to hold, based on the second potato's name. The default is "son", because that's the meme. Some potato names cause it to have different "pride" textures and if those relate to a particular gender (e.g. "girlstater" -> "me or my daughter", "bntater" -> "me or my child", "systater" -> "me or my children"), it affects this message. Giving the tater more than one other tater always changes it to "children".

"That's not my name" happens when you rename the Tiny Potato to a misspelled version of "Vazkii", such as swapped letters.

・About the page order, especially in sections like "botania.page.flowers": Why is the page order structured the way it is? Was it rearranged at some point due to the addition of new entries or updates?

・This is slightly off-topic, but regarding the Patchouli Japanese translation PR—do you know why it hasn’t been merged? There are both open and closed PRs, but I personally think the one submitted by knumatakaki (with just the change from $ to %) should be accepted. What’s your opinion on that?

Not sure, but probably because the devs are not very active and likely cannot verify the correctness of the PR themselves.

The described mechanic is: If the "playing fields" of two Dandelifeon flowers exactly touch each other without overlapping, the cell blocks can propagate between them, assuming both flowers are active.

・What exactly is the behavior described in "botania.page.elfGear2"?

Using an Elementium Pickaxe to mine blocks will skip the item drops for common materials (called "disposable" materials in this context), like cobblestone or netherrack. For some less common materials like andesite, sandstone, or silktouched stone or deepslate (these are considered "semi-disposable" in this context), the item drops only happen when sneaking while breaking those blocks.

・Finally, in "botania.page.pistonRelay1", what does the term "frame" refer to in this context?

I assume it means a contraption where the force relay is surrounded by a mix of sticky and non-sticky pistons to be able to choose whether the bound block is supposed to be moved with the relay or not. (Like in the contraption showed in this Reddid post – hail Spongebob the Annihilator)

Thank you very much for your time, and I apologize for the number of questions. I really appreciate your work, and I’m trying to ensure the translation is as consistent and accurate as possible.

Thank you for taking the necessary care.
