[Deck UI] Starting Non-Steam Games while in Family View unintuitive / buggy

Open Maykin-99 opened this issue 3 years ago • 7 comments

Your system information

  • Steam client version: 1656362729
  • SteamOS version: 3.2 / 20220526.100
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: [Yes]
  • Opted into SteamOS beta?: [Yes]
  • Have you checked for updates in Settings > System?: [Yes]

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When I want to play a Non-Steam Game game while in Family View you should be able to just select it in the Library and then press Play just like other Steam Games.

Instead we need to select "Play" in the game's context menu and even then there is still an unnecessary prompt to leave Family View.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Enable Family View
  2. Add Non-Steam Game
  3. Press A on the Non-Steam Game in the library A prompt appears to enter the PIN to leave Family View. Ideally this wouldn't happen. -> Cancel.
  4. Press instead
  5. Choose "Play" A prompt appears to leave Family View but the game starts in the background anyway. Ideally there is no prompt.
  6. Cancel prompt and play the game.

Is there a way to keep a non-steam app from being accessed in family view? Looks like your instructions provide a bypass.

This work around should not be fixed because that will prevent non steam games from being played altogether without having mammy/daddy log out of family view all the time. I believe you need to have access to the PIN to be able to add non steam games to steam anyway so they were added by someone who decided they were OK. So I'd probably just remove the prompts altogether.

I noticed this the other day. Looked like my daughter could not play non-steam games I have added whilst if family view. Non steam games are emulator games in this case.

Just realised that this work around actually means you can play them. Which is a relief!

+1 for this being fixed.

maybe have in the game properties window a checkbox option "allow in family view" to allow an non steam game app through Family View, as wanting to set up an external gaming machine with SteamOS with Family View restricting the games he can play, but want to allow non steam games through such as emulators.

The problem with allowing all comes when sharing for example the Steam Deck. If you want your own adult games adding as a non steam game, but also want family view so your children can play on the SteamDeck.

So we should have an option to allow a game in Family View. This will solve the problem completely.

I would also like to be able to add specific non-steam games as playable. I know it's a complex issue, but it's certainly doable.

I'm facing the same problem. I'd like to set some non steam (emulation) games as family games, so the steam deck doesnt ask for the pin.
