Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Steam randomly freezes up since either the current or before-current beta branch (can't recall which of both it is). Visiting the story, launching games or just browsing my library - it can happen at any time.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Do something with Steam
  2. ????
  3. Minor freezing

I know I submitted something similar before, but it's not the same this time - last time it was purely when out of focus/AFK. Now it aggressively freezes also when active

I am also having this issue on an up to date Arch Linux, both beta and live build of steam; On wayland and X11.

EDIT: added steam runtime diagnostic! Steam Runtime Info.txt

I'm having the same issue, but it seems more related to some activities (for example, changing status from online to invisible in the friends list results in a freeze, followed by "Steam is not responding"). I have tested Debian Stable (+kernel backport) and Arch Linux, as well as the repository version and Flatpak. Happens with the stable and the beta client.

My GPU is Radeon RX 7600XT. I'm using Wayland and GNOME.

Steam Native NVIDIA+Wayland Changing status resets steam, happened once

Steam Native AMD+Wayland Freeze happens immediately after changing my status to away, freeze happened immediately I after changed from away to invisible, freeze happened immediately after I changed from invisible to offline and steam reset

Steam runtime AMD+Wayland Much like steam native under Wayland

Having the same issue on both beta and stable. Disabling "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views" in Settings>Interface fixes the issue for me.

+1 for disabling "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views" in Settings>Interface (H/T Dangonizer).

I started getting these spurious freezes of the entire X/Plasma user interface (usually 2-3 times during the Steam client startup or restart process, and then at random intervals thereafter; each freeze lasts anywhere from one to four seconds and completely disables mouse movement, refresh of background windows, etc.) after upgrading from an NVidia to AMD GPU. I do not get these freezes when Steam is not running, nor when I swap the NVidia card back into the same system (and run the proprietary nvidia driver instead of amdgpu). Many other users report these lock-ups when using the amdgpu driver in Wayland, but I'm using vanilla Xorg and saw the same.

Anyway, after disabling GPU-accelerated rendering in webviews (this does not affect your acceleration in games), I no longer see the freezes. Hard to say whether the fault is in the amdgpu driver or Steam itself, although it's certainly notable that other apps don't trigger it.

Have this strange freezes when I click something or change status on friends.

Replying to https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/10793#issuecomment-2118980034

Try disabling "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views", that helped fix this issue for me.

I've recently been encountering these freezes as well, mostly when interacting with the chat window.

Ditto, it really seems to be chat related in someway because it's always when I am messaging folks that it locks up. On openSUSE Tumbleweed. Happens under both KDE Plasma and Gnome.

Trying the disable "Enable GPU accelerated rendering in web views" fix and so far so good.

If it's helpful to give any kind of debug output let me know as I can recreate the problem pretty easily most days.

With AMD, can confirm disabling hw acceleration fixes it. But as excepted, this make GamepadUI almost unusable Just to add that it is not chat related.

Frezze can appear when trying to add a non steam game, whem trying to launch gamepadui, on friend ui ...

100% repro when using friends UI (try to go online or offline)

disabled hw acceleration fixes issue, but steam overlay will be mostly slow and unusable
