steam client crashed after launching game

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

when launching from the depths it should open into the launcher menu and not freeze

when launching from the depths through proton experimental the game launches but freezes and the steam client crashes, when run through a terminal i see that there's an out of memory assert after an attempted 1.7gb allocation even though im on a 64bit system with 32gb of ram and very little of it in use

Steps for reproducing this issue:

1. launch steam through terminal
2. set from the depths to run though proton experimental
3. the game should launch into its launcher menu and the steam client should crash
