[Portal 2] Fans run very loudly (100% usage), game stutters, then crashes within 5 minutes.

Hi all! Hope I've written this correctly!

I've been trying to run Portal 2 on my new computer, however I can't make it 5 minutes into the game before it crashes. Upon startup of the game, my computer's fans start running very loudly, quickly reaching 100% fan speed within 15 seconds. The game runs smoothly for the most part, however I've noticed some stuttering in the gameplay and audio during the first introductory movement tutorial in the hotel/suspension room. This stuttering gets more and more frequent before the game suddenly closes, leaving no error messages or "Portal 2.exe has stopped working" popups. I've updated all the drivers I could think of, reinstalled the game thrice, verified my game cache/files, tried Steam's provided troubleshooting techniques, and messaged Steam Support about this, none of which could resolve the matter. I know that my computer can easily run a number of games that are equally or more intensive as this one, which is why I'm confused about why it's having so many troubles with running Portal 2.

Here's a screenshot of the developer console. I'm unsure if any information here would be of use, but I'm including it just in case. 20200204074058_1

In order to reproduce this issue, I simply boot up the game.

My PC's specs can be found here; https://gist.github.com/pastelneigh/6431f47ea982c3356c203169b2b34b81

Some additional troubleshooting methods I've tried are; • Changing the installation location from my C-drive to my D-drive • Starting the game in offline mode • Downloading and running a Portal 2 mod using the same engine (Thinking with Time Machine) • Running the .exe as an administrator • Lowering/increasing the game's maximum FPS through the developer console • Lowering all in-game graphics settings to minimum

If anyone has any ideas as to what I should try next, please let me know!

Thanks!

What behavior do you get if you disable multicore rendering?

Yetoo1 avatar Feb 05 '20 02:02 Yetoo1

I've disabled multicore rendering and have been playing for about 15 minutes, and it seems to have solved the crashes, which is great! The stuttering and 100% fan usage is still an issue however. I've tried lowering graphics settings, enabling/disabling laptop power-saving mode, restarting the game, but none of these have seemed to helped. Thank you so much for solving my issue with the crashing however! If you have any ideas as to why I'd be experiencing these other issues please let me know!

@pastelneigh Is the fan(s) that speed up the GPU fan, CPU fan, or case fan? Have you turned off Waiting for Vertical Sync or tried lower settings of that? If not, what was the behavior when doing so?

Also, look through recent messages in Event Viewer under Applications and System for errors logged around time when fans start up.

My CPU, GPU, and case/side fans all speed up. I just tried changing the V-Sync settings, turning them off and trying double and triple-buffered however I did not see any change.

I checked the Event Viewer and could not find any errors or warnings. I did find an Information event that occurred when I opened Portal 2, but I'm not sure how relevant it is. I'll post it here just in case it helps at all. https://gist.github.com/pastelneigh/c39c6845cd72df88547a647cedacf3be

It's strange that the fans go crazy even when in the main menu. Might not be relevant though, I'm not sure.

Thank you again!

@pastelneigh Did you try restarting the game after changing the V-Sync settings? If that doesn't work, you can try changing the paged pool memory setting and restarting the game and see if there is any difference. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what further to do at this point. You could export all your event logs in the Applications and System category and post them, but that may be overkill and not necessary at the moment. I would wait to do that until someone else finds that more information is needed pertaining to event logs.

I've just tried restarting the game after changing around the V-Sync settings and the paged pool memory settings but they're still as loud as ever. I'll hold off on posting my PC's whole event logs until needed, but for now thank you so much for your help so far! I really appreciate it. Is there any chance the .dmp and .mdmp files could be of use? Steam Support requested that I sent them and I just thought it might help. Are there any error logs that get saved anywhere?

pastelneigh avatar Feb 05 '20 07:02 pastelneigh

@pastelneigh Those files may help and wouldn't hurt posting. Those files are the only error logs (only produced during crashes) (as far as I know).

Yetoo1 avatar Feb 05 '20 17:02 Yetoo1

Neither GitHub nor the file hosting service I use supports .dmp or .mdmp files. Is there a better way I can send these to you?

Put them in a zip file and drag it into a new comment.

portal_2_dmps.zip

Hopefully that worked!

I looked through your crash dumps a bit and it looks like you are running out of memory which would explain the high CPU usage. Might be related to downloading workshop maps. Have you subscribed to a lot of maps? You could also try to turn off Steam Cloud.

I just unsubscribed from all the workshop content I had and the issue is still there :(. I also checked my Steam Cloud settings but I didn't appear to have it enabled in the first place.
