VRAM bug in SteamVR menu causes significant FPS drop in Unity VR titles

This bug is very common but I’ve yet to see an issue about it on here so I thought I’d make it.
When opening and closing the SteamVR menu while playing Unity-based VR titles that have higher VRAM usage (VRChat being chief among these), there’s a significant chance of one’s frames being reduced to ~11fps, with the game becoming a stuttery mess. The only fix that can be done without restarting SteamVR is changing the output resolution in the SteamVR settings, but after opening the menu again, the issue can and will eventually return until SteamVR is fully restarted.
This really hurts the overall experience of using games like this, as it means that anytime you use the menu to browse your desktop or check SteamVR apps you run the risk of triggering the bug and having to do a full restart of everything.
