Packet loss since Armory update

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When I try to play any online CS2 match (competitive, casual, anything really), I randomly get very high packet loss for a short period of time. To be more specific, the up arrow is red and has a high number next to it. When this happens, I abruptly teleport a short distance in the direction I'm walking and then right back. Sometimes when this happens, I can see people through the wall or behind a corner. I am actually scared as to not get VAC banned because of this issue. And I'm not the only one with this issue. I have also tried having ping 8.8.8.8 running on my second monitor. When the lag spike happens, the ping doesn't spike at all (To be more specific it fluctuates, but nothing out of the ordinary). All of this started happening ever since the new Armory update. I have also tried all the option in the Buffering to smooth over packet loss under Game settings. For (maybe like) 1 day, it fixed the issue when I set it to 1 packet. Since then none of the options fix anything. I'm playing on the native version of CS2. I have tried playing with proton, but that prevents me from playing on official Valve servers.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Queue into a game
  2. Play
  3. Random lag spikes

I am experiencing it as well and it is very annoying and seems completely random. Here is a video of it happening, including the new network graphs if they help in any way.

This is how it usually looks for me, but I've also had one occasion when it was very severe and the game was literally unplayable.

It doesn't seem to be connected with how the network works in general, because I am able to talk/stream with other people on Discord without issues at the same time.

Can confirm it's happening for me as well, observing same exact issue as described by OP, although my PL spikes come alongside FPS microstuttering.

My connection is also otherwise stable, made sure to ping google during gameplay and observed 0% packet loss while getting random FPS/packet loss dips ingame.

OS: Linux Mint 22 Kernel: Linux 6.8.0-48-generic

CPU : 10600k GPU : 1660ti

why even make netcode changes in the first place when you all guys new that this will cause this issue? it's not random for me at all.. always fixed in place for no reason

I would like to confirm, that since the Train update, the issue has been fixed for me. I don't know if the issue still persists for others, so I'll leave this issue opened. If the admin's decide it's no longer needed, feel free to close this issue.

Unfortunately, the issue is still very much present for me. Here is some footage from a game I played today:

It doesn't look as severe in the recording (probably because of slow movement and lack of other players in the visible area), but it does still feel very bad. The symptoms have changed a bit though, since before the lag spikes would be visible on the graph immediately, and now the graph appears to be delayed.

Edit: the issue doesn't seem to be related to anything happening in the gameplay (as in visible to players) since it happens while playing, spectating or even freeze time. It seems completely random.

Let me know if there is any way I can collect logs or if there is any additional info that might help solve the issue.

i think it would be better if cs2 had still used 2 pqckets insteqd of everything being in 1 packet which is huge for some reason

I thought this issue was gone, because I haven't seen it for two days (Dec 10 and Dec 11), but today my game updated and it's even worse. Here is an example:

The issue is much more severe than before - it usually doesn't happen for a longer period of time (~20 minutes of no issues), but when it starts, then it will start and stop randomly. Restarting the game is not enough, I have to restart my PC*. After I closed the game, I've received multiple notifications about "Unable to start Remote Play session" or similar. Maybe Steam launcher is doing something that interferes with the network thread of CS?

It's happening both on the latest and LTS kernels.

*Maybe restarting Steam would be enough, I'll check later.

Edit: My steam client also updated today, not only CS2, so it could be an interaction between these two.

I can confirm that restarting steam does not solve the issue and I have to restart my PC every time. I've also checked that it doesn't have anything to do with NetowrkManager using the iwd backend as it does also appear when using wpa_supplicant. Setting packet smoothing to 1 tick does help a bit, but the issue is still pretty severe and makes the game unplayable.

It did not happen in games I played in the morning today (Dec 12, UTC+1), but it did happen on the game I played in the evening (Dec 12 also).

I've analyzed the journal logs. The part I'm attaching comes from the following time period:

  1. I start playing the game at around 23:44 (UTC+1)
  2. The issue appears around midnight
  3. I close steam
  4. JOURNAL START
  5. I open Steam, launch CS2, go back into the game
  6. The issue still appears
  7. I close CS2 and shutdown PC from the Gnome menu
  8. JOURNAL END
  9. Shutdown

From what I can see in the logs, that looks interesting:

  • at 00:05:09 (line 278) there is a steamwebhelper crash that repeats a bit later
  • at 00:05:44 (line 353) there are some gnome-shell assertions that fail - I don't think it should have anything to do with this, but it could in some weird way

Other considerations:

  • I use the Steam Beta client
  • I have game recording turned on

journal_short.log

Let me know if there are any other logs I can check of if I can send you the logs/ID of a specific game where the issue appears. The download link for the game replay is here if it helps. My Steam name is Kwasow.

I have to add one thing to the clip I posted two days ago, because I've only now understood what happened.

In the end of the clip, you can see me kill an enemy pushing me and not clearing the corner. I was surprised, because I thought he knew I was ramp, but it is very likely that he did not see me, since when I saw him during the bug (sliding out of ramp) I didn't actually move, so I saw that he was stairs, but he did not see me - as far as the server was concerned, I was hiding in the corner in ramp the entire time.

This is issue may create a competitive advantage at times @kisak-valve.

The more severe issue has now been gone for 2-3 days over multiple games. The original issue (with minor, but still annoying network lag) is still there.

Have just experienced the same issue on 2 games tonight different Maps both on OCE servers. Tracert seems fine on both and ping test comes out at 4ms yet getting net jitter on the graph (has gone as high as 192ms)

this netcode has to get reverted back to how it was, otherwise the game will just not be playable at all. especially when steams sdr is NOT COMPATIBLE with this netcode. if this doesn't get fixed i guess i'll start reverse engineering the game

I have also been experiencing this in most of my cs2 games on valve official servers. I've tried different internet connections (my home internet and mobile data hotspot) and the issue still persists. I don't think this is an issue on my end as I don't experience net jitter, packet loss or high ping issues on any other game. Also worth noting is when I play on third party servers like FACEIT, I don't run into any issues and its works smoothly.

I've tried all the usual troubleshooting steps, I did notice that turning on tick rate buffer to 2 slightly improved it but it was still unplayable.

OS: Windows 10 GPU: RX 6600xt CPU: Ryzen 7 3700x RAM: 32GB 3200mhz DDR4 Storage: 1tb m.2 SSD

the game is unplayable and networking must be reworked CS:GO was playable on 128 tick CS2 isnt CS2 outgoing packets are too big and sent too fast resulting in outgoing delay and jitter for people with bufferbloat or HFC/DSL/... connections CS2 is currently unplayable on many European ISPs, many regions dont have GPON yet

Unfortunately, the answer is no. They messed up the netcode very badly and would have to go back to square 1 or maybe port csgos netcode to source2 instead.. For now all you can do is pray it doesn't happen.. for me sometimes there is no ping spike or packetloss but i keep teleporting everywhere and this was reported numerous times by people but still not fixed

I've tested different kernel schedulers and it didn't solve the issue. I thought that maybe the network process was being limited by the system, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Even when it's given higher priority, the packet loss still occurs at the same frequency and severity.

This implies that the issue is highly likely in the game, not in the system.

I'm experiencing the same issue on NixOS (Linux). My PC is very powerful, and I have an Intel AX200 network card. I've tried changing essentially every setting one by one, ending up with the following modprobe config:

options iwlwifi power_save=0 bt_coex_active=0 uapsd_disable=1 11n_disable=1 amsdu_size=0 fw_restart=0 disable_11ax=1
options iwlmvm power_scheme=1

Yet no luck. I think this is something out of my control and an issue with CS2 itself. I really hope it can be resolved soon, since I'm not really able to play it comfortably for now.

Edit: I was able to fix this by switching from Hyprland to KDE/Gnome. I have no idea why Hyprland might be causing this, but thankfully after a week of troubleshooting, I've found the cause. Hopefully helps anyone else gaming from Hyprland.

Edit 2: I diagnosed this to be caused by ashell I was using a status bar called ashell which seemed to be the cause for it. It might be worth disabling some programs to see if it fixes it for you.

That's interesting, I'm playing on Gnome (Arch) and this is where I'm experiencing the issue. I've copied the console outputs after a casual game, where the lag spikes happened 2-3 times. I'll try different desktop environments to see if it changes anything.

months later after a week or so of research, trial and error i've managed to find solution which worked for me on linux! it will probably work with some other wifi cards like intel AX2xx series AX210 or something, but i don't possess such devices to test this out. there's just a solution that worked for me and i don't know who to blame exactly

i have added this to my modprobe.conf:

i'm using NixOS, so this is how it looks in my configuration:

Modt people have the same problem on Windows with the serverside packet loss. Servers upload is your download, if the servers upload starts craping out (usually craps out) you will get massive packetloss and ping spike. This was never a problem before the armory update.

I'm experiencing the same issue on NixOS (Linux). My PC is very powerful, and I have an Intel AX200 network card. I've tried changing essentially every setting one by one, ending up with the following modprobe config:

options iwlwifi power_save=0 bt_coex_active=0 uapsd_disable=1 11n_disable=1 amsdu_size=0 fw_restart=0 disable_11ax=1 options iwlmvm power_scheme=1

Yet no luck. I think this is something out of my control and an issue with CS2 itself. I really hope it can be resolved soon, since I'm not really able to play it comfortably for now.

Edit: I was able to fix this by switching from Hyprland to KDE/Gnome. I have no idea why Hyprland might be causing this, but thankfully after a week of troubleshooting, I've found the cause. Hopefully helps anyone else gaming from Hyprland.

Edit 2: I diagnosed this to be caused by ashellhttps://github.com/MalpenZibo/ashell I was using a status bar called ashell which seemed to be the cause for it. It might be worth disabling some programs to see if it fixes it for you.

I've done some testing and have made some interesting discoveries.

Changing DE

I've tested GNOME (my default), KDE and Hyprland and all have the same issue, so it doesn't seem to be related to the DE, even though it has worked for someone in the past.

Disabling power saving on the network adapter

I have a Mediatek network adapter (built in to the motherboard) and it had power saving on my default. I disabled it, but it didn't change anything

Steam Remote Play

It seems that the issue is not related to CS2 at all and it's a coincidence that it appeared with the Armory update. I've recently started using Steam Remote Play and when streaming a game, the same thing happens! It will stream smoothly and then after a few minutes, it will start lagging and show the yellow signal icon indicating a signal loss. When I stream CS2 (not recommended, but just out of curiosity), the lags happen at the same time.

I still haven't been able to pinpoint the issue and find the cause, but it's very unlikely that it's an issue with CS2. It could be a Linux issue, or maybe it's an issue with the Steam launcher and it somehow affects CS2, since they are pretty tightly integrated from what I understand.
