Big frame drops when hitting tab

Open ageisen2000 opened this issue 1 year ago • 17 comments

Your system information

  • System information from steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information) in a gist: https://gist.github.com/ageisen2000/306693a479af681b69e2b4be12c460d3
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

When I press tab the game drops frames.

Expected result: Game runs smoothly as possible at all times

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Join a match
  2. Press tab
  3. Observe frame drops

If you spam tab it will make the problem even worse. Every menu load seems to cause freezing

It seems vaguely reminiscent of this bug: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/csgo-osx-linux/issues/3803

Possible duplicate of #3876.

@kisak-valve, I saw that one but since it had the windows label on it I wasn't sure if I should make a new one or not. If you determine it's the same root cause you can close this.

We are waiting for a solution to this problem 😉

I have the same issue, also on Windows, opening the scoreboard drops FPS massively, didn't check opening console.

For me it seems to cause more packet loss than FPS drop, and pressing TAB while running teleports me backwards a bit.

This seems fixed for me now. I think it was fixed by the nvidia 565.77 driver update because I haven't seen a cs2 update since I played a couple of days ago when I still had the problem.

edit: Just checked game data and I last played 2024-12-05 01:00 UTC, then again tonight 2024-12-06 22:00 UTC. Sometime between those times this problem got fixed. The only updated/rebuilt system packages I have between those times are:

nvidia-kernel-565.77_OPEN_6.11.9-x86_64-1_SBo
nvidia-driver-565.77_multilib-x86_64-2_SBo
ladspa_sdk-1.17-x86_64-1_SBo
Catch-2.13.10-x86_64-1_SBo
libzen-0.4.41-x86_64-1_SBo
libmediainfo-24.11-x86_64-1_SBo
mediainfo-24.11-x86_64-1_SBo

Yeah I am not noticing this while playing either now

This bug is back again today for me. Maybe after kernel upgrade from 6.11 to 6.12.4. It doesn't happen after winning the round and running around waiting until next round though, only during the actual round time.

edit: I just tested with kernel 6.11.9 and it's bugged there too again, so I guess nothing to do with the kernel upgrade. I am using nvidia 565.77 on both kernels. I don't think I saw a cs2 update since it was working 2 nights ago

~~This kernel was compiled with CONFIG_MEMCG_V1=y which was missing from my 6.11 kernel, in case that could make any difference.~~

Yep, i just updated my nvidia drivers today on bazzite:nvidia-stable and this is back

565.77

Poltergeisen avatar Dec 12 '24 22:12 Poltergeisen

Strange since it was 565.77 which initially seemed to fix it for me. Looking at my other recent updates, the only thing I can see that could make any difference is my system SDL2 updated from 2.30.9 (when it was good) to 2.30.10 (now it's bad). But I think cs2 includes its own SDL libs anyway.

af7567 avatar Dec 12 '24 22:12 af7567

Fixed again for me today, but last night was broken. Nothing has changed between now and then apart from a steam client update. But after restarting steam and cs2 it is broken again. So it just seems to be something random that happens when cs2 starts that triggers it.

Doesn't happen when dead and watching another player

af7567 avatar Dec 18 '24 21:12 af7567

I don't think its only related to scoreboard. I also have fps drops when opening buy menu or pause menu (esc). Even when hiding hud with cl_draw_only_deathnotices 1, i get ~+50fps. Probably something related to panorama?

dom1torii avatar Jan 20 '25 12:01 dom1torii

Yeah this was still happening for me yesterday as well.

I also get a ton of stuttering when using the recording feature but even with that off I'm still experiencing these drops

Poltergeisen avatar Jan 20 '25 15:01 Poltergeisen

happens to me too, on Windows with -vulkan with intel dGPU.

Doesn't always happend but usually a few round into a multiplayer map. Isn't limit to pressing TAB (other binds also cause this) or even a bind (+showscores in console). freezes from 100ms up to 250ms and then displays the scoreboard just fine. Sometimes also similar freeze when closing scoreboard. Seems to get worse over time... (not quantified).

also noticed a bunch of PATH NOT FOUND cooccur with this even, related to dirs named csgo_ui_particle_scene_panel_empty

This seems to be fixed (again) for me tonight, after the 2025-03-14 patch which fixed the crash. I didn't get the freezing after about 5 games (and restarted the PC before the last 2 games just in case that broke it).

af7567 avatar Mar 15 '25 00:03 af7567

Broken again today, but it was still fine last night. Since last night there has been no steam updates or system updates. Still on Apr 21 cs2 release. It's been good for almost 2 months so I thought it was fixed :), no idea what could have triggered it today. The only difference today is that shaders were compiled when entering Mirage which seemed strange since there had been no game or system updates.

edit: The game has also started freezing on exit again too which is another related problem.
