game always starts in windowed mode, despite fullscreen being selected

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
Every time I start playing cs2, the game starts in "windowed" mode rather than in "fullscreen", as is indicated in the video settings.
If I change the settings from "fullscreen", to anything else then back to "fullscreen" again, the "apply changes" button enables and I am able to get the game to go fullscreen, but after each restart its back to windowed.
Notice in the screenshot that "fullscreen" is selected, but the "apply changes" button is disabled, and the game is visibly in windowed mode.
Steps for reproducing this issue:
Exact steps to reproduce this are unknown, as a number of crashes were involved when the game was initially released and I suspect those crashes may have come into play here. However, my best guess is:
- select "windowed" mode
- exit game
- start game
- select "fullscreen" mode
- exit game
- start game
- notice game is started in "windowed" rather than "fullscreen", and the settings show "fullscreen" as the current mode.
Hello @senecaso, please check if you're using any launch options with the game that would override the in-game settings to a windowed game start.
the only launch options I am currently using are: 2> /tmp/stderr.log > /tmp/stdout.log
to simply redirect stderr and stdout. I was using them to debug a previous issue, but they are no longer needed.
I have now removed them, and the game still launches in windowed mode.
That bug would be the same as https://github.com/ValveSoftware/csgo-osx-linux/issues/3274
@Yuri-K7 I'm not convinced this is a duplicate. The description of the problem in #3274 is that that game is in fact running in fullscreen mode, however, the taskbars are simply still visible. The issue I'm experiencing is that the game is actually launched in windowed mode. It may not be visible from my screenshot, since I cropped it, but there is a lot of the desktop visible, not just the taskbar.
It is the same, it also starts in windowed instead of fullscreen, that's why you see the taskbar, the window is at the same resolution than the screen. To get fullscreen you need to apply fullscreen again in the settings.
I have the same issue, I reported it here https://github.com/ValveSoftware/csgo-osx-linux/issues/3308
I can reproduce on Xubuntu 22.04.3, Xfce desktop. Doesn't happen on Windows.
Workaround: switch to windowed, apply, then back to fullscreen, apply. The screen will blink for a moment and then it will be back in fullscreen.
Same issue on Manjaro. It worked as expected on Wednesday. I play with a custom launch option for res (gave black bars on either side) and to get my microphone to work. Launched today and started getting this issue.
Launch Options:
-sdlaudiodriver pulseaudio -w 2560 -h 1600
I did remove them but still same issue

Even better workaround is switching between refresh rate values and applying.

True. That's a lot faster :D (if you have more than one refresh rate option)
Also happens in Popos
I emailed cs2team since last time I emailed them with the 0.5 crosshair outline size, they fixed it in the next update so they might be reading emails more often. I hope they'll fix this.
I used to have the same issue. However, after updating my Nvidia drivers to version 525.125.06
, the issue was resolved. The game now starts in windowed mode but automatically switches to fullscreen when the entry video is played.
My System Information in a gist.

Hah, where do you find a email to send to?
Tonight's update fixed this issue for me on Arch + GNOME
Still persists on i3wm + Arch
Flatpak Steam Gentoo KDE
same story here
Still problem on Manjaro with KDE any fix soon ?
No not yet
Also an issue for me with Arch and KDE
I have the same issue on Debian testing with KDE. Native steam.
#3570 notes the the game's behavior improved for them for a while, and has now regressed.
FWIW, the issue was never fixed for me, so I'm certainly not seeing a regression. The only time it actually worked for me was the very first time I launched the game after installing it. Ever since then, it always opens in windowed.

Same, the fullscreen also worked for me only for the first launch, since then it never worked.

One time I thought it was fixed after an update, but the update just made "full-screen windowed" the default again.
@senecaso latest update fixed it for me, can you confirm on your side as well?
Just checked version Jan 04 13:22:28
, and the issue is still present.
If you are facing the same issue as https://github.com/ValveSoftware/csgo-osx-linux/issues/3648 :
Try using SDL_VIDEO_MINIMIZE_ON_FOCUS_LOSS=0 %command%
launch options. Seems to help (I am on "full-screen windowed", though).

This fixing the problem with alt tabing in Fullscreen I mean this one

@ZeroYamaoka not sure what I am missing, I am talking about the same issue (Taskbar showing after alt-tabbing and having to re-apply Display Mode settings). Came here because @kisak-valve closed your issue, as a duplicate of this one, although these issues seem a little different. Started for me with the latest Arms Race update and the launch option seems to have fixed it.
