[linux] fonts are ugly and missing characters
This may be nitpicking but I would like to point it out so maybe hopefully someone will fix it or at least find a way to fix it manually.
CSGO linux's fonts are ugly with wrong sizes, incorrect rendering, butchered up and they miss characters.
Below are the problems I have found:
Console
Windows
Linux

Notice how on linux the fonts in the console have antialiasing (smoothing) whereas in windows they don't. Because the font size is small in this case antialiasing makes them blurry and more difficult to read. Windows version is better in that regard. Can this be turned off?
Console Zoomed In
Windows
Linux

You can see how much more blurry (and uglier) the linux version's fonts are by zooming in.
Server browser comparison
Windows
Linux

Notice in the linux version:
- all fonts are bigger making them not fit in their respective enclosures and make them ugly (wrong size)
- The close button of the window is garbled and ugly (wrong character or missing)
- same problem as above for the little icon in the left of "Alert me when a player slot is available"
- Notice how the above text is getting cut off because it is not fitting entirely, making it ugly and not practical.
- notice in the Game info window, the left side titles and the IP are in a dark color that makes them illegible and ugly.

Although in these shots it may seem that the linux version is better, that's not true because if you take a careful look you'll see that it is not very legible and it is not aesthetically pleasing as the windows version. Below are zoomed versions of the above that give a much better distinction.

Notice how in the linux version
- the dark (black) border around the characters in some sides is missing (it's getting cut off), making the fonts ugly and wrong
- the smoothing of the fonts makes them more blurry
@Nek80 Do you see russian (or other alphabet) names in console? Easy way to test is to just change your name in steam to something russian from translate.google.com and type name in console.
Names in game looks fine

All I see in console is blank spaces like this

When I copy from console to console input line I get strange looking characters, always the same one like this

When I copy the text from CSGO console and paste it here/other applications I get
Damage Given to "Ксения Котова" - 82 in 3 hits
I'm on Arch Linux with Plasma 5 and have installed ttf-ms-win10 from AUR so when I try to add Lucida Console font from http://ufonts.com/fonts/lucida-console.html I get a message saying this font is already installed. Could you check if you have this problem with missing characters as well? Also what distro are you on?
@Nek80, I am unable to reproduce this issue, are you still experiencing this issue with the 64 bit client?
Closing pending feedback.
I don't have a windows version to compare it too so I can't really talk about the console font quality, but all the other problems still exist.

I am on Ubuntu Mate 16.04.1 at the moment.
Can developers comment on what fonts are used in Linux client for console, scoreboard, and in-game chat? Are these different than those used in Windows client?
Any updates on this? Font looks really big on demoui:

I get this too, I wanted to try watching my own demos but most of the buttons being unreadable makes this difficult.

Same here, the font on Tablet in Danger Zone mode isn't good placed, color box cuts the text and it's not readable. I've seen font problem only in Danger Zone, is there any way to change font in Tablet or way to fix it?

This issue still persists by now. My suggestion is to list some fonts required by the game for the user end to install I think?

Does anyone have such a list?
still persists
still persists
Yup, still persists

Same here, missing font on Community Browser and Console
EDIT:
Somewhere in this list, one package contain the right fonts we are looking for (Archlinux)
I will uninstall all of them step by step to find out which one it is

EDIT 2: The answer is somewhere in this list
ttf-carlito
ttf-croscore
ttf-anonymous-pro
ttf-arimo-nerd
ttf-baekmuk
ttf-dejavu
ttf-droid
ttf-hack-nerd
ttf-hannom
ttf-indic-otf
ttf-input
ttf-iosevka-nerd
ttf-khmer
ttf-linux-libertine
ttf-linux-libertine-g
ttf-nerd-fonts-symbols-2048-em
ttf-nerd-fonts-symbols-2048-em-mono
ttf-nerd-fonts-symbols-common
ttf-proggy-clean
ttf-roboto
ttf-sazanami
ttf-sourcecodepro-nerd
ttf-terminus-nerd
And the answer is ttf-bitstream-vera
(For ArchLinux at least)
Here is the list of installed fonts (for other distros):
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/Vera.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/VeraBI.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/VeraBd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/VeraIt.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/VeraMoBI.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/VeraMoBd.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/VeraMoIt.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/VeraMono.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/VeraSe.ttf
/usr/share/fonts/TTF/VeraSeBd.ttf
My experience on Arch Linux:
- Removing
ttf-bitstream-verafixes the ugliness of characters as discussed in this issue. - Removing
otf-font-awesomefixes missing characters and only CAPITAL letters in toggleconsole prompt.
I have no idea what font the game is falling back to now with those 2 gone, but it made the experience better on linux.
Some official word/fix from the developers would be nice, or a launch option to override what font is used.

for me uninstalling or installing ttf-bitstream-vera looks exactly the same, text huge and missing font icons
console looks normal for me
Regarding ttf-bitstream-vera it was for the console which wasn't normal ("_" character was visualy missing)
