Performance drop with "Boost player contrast" video option

Your system information

  • System information from steam (Steam -> Help -> System Information): gist
  • Have you checked for system updates?: Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Since the recent update introducing "Boost player contrast" shaders (?), video performance drops significantly during match startup freeze time (while the desaturated color shader is active). This seems to be happening also at various times. For example in dust2, happened in long lane while opponents were even not visible yet.

I get around 30~40 fps when I usually get 65 fps (fps_max set to 65). The GPU temperature also soars much higher than normal. After disabling the feature, the performance is normal again.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Start the game and enter a match
  2. Performance is terrible at various times, especially during freeze time at the beginning of each round
  3. Disable "Boost player contrast" in video options
  4. Performance is back to normal

I'm seeing 40%+ of frames drop any time even one player is on-screen when this setting is on. The drop doesn't worsen as more players appear though. It worsens the closer you are to players.

update: actually, i'm seeing this lag now regardless of the setting in online servers. offline, it only happens when player contrast is on.

Fixed for me after the June 17th update.

Not fixed for me, still very laggy when active.

Can confirm on RX570 (Mesa 20.2). I've opened an issue with mesa: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/3631. But as the OP uses an Nvidia card this suggests it being a problem with the CS:GO OpenGL client.

I can no longer reproduce the issue on Mesa 21.0.2 on the latest CS:GO client version. Can somebody confirm that?

@glubsy does this still exist? can you remove one of your sli cards?

@romanstingler sorry I cannot test currently as I don't have CS:GO installed anymore. I cannot remove one of my SLI card (I have attempted in the past, but could not do it since it's a laptop and everything is very tightly stuck together).
