Hello @Sgarc783, does adding -fullscreen to the game's launch options have an effect? (from https://github.com/ValveSoftware/csgo-osx-linux/issues/2171#issuecomment-538284342)

Stuck on black screen while starting - OS Catalina 10.15.2 Beta (19C39d)

@Sgarc783 try resetting your video config under the /steam/userdata/730/config csgo files. if you delete the .cfg files they should regenerate at default settings on next launch.

@lionblaze55 didn't help. I have tried also uninstall steam and install again. Now displays csgo_osx64 in dock, after few seconds it disappears and nothing happens.

Tried launching with (tried separately):

  • fullscreen
  • windowed
  • novid
  • nojoy.

Csgo opens to a black screen, windowed or fullscreen depending on launch arg, then after loading for a few, beach ball of death comes up then crashes.

Other things attempted:

  • launched offline
  • launched after deleting configs
  • deleting local configs then validate
  • deleting personal configs
  • reinstalled
  • validated files.
  • Tried beta branch 1.37.3.3, same result

To add to the things ive tried:

  • Set display resolution to default
  • Minimising the game after launch

Additional information:

  • This could possibilty be due to the fact I am running a hackintosh, however I have no issue running other Valve games such as Dota 2.
  • Currently running Catalina 10.15.1

Hardware information:

  • Ryzen 3700x
  • rx5700

Edited to add more information Edited to add even more information

Same issue here: Steam launches a process called csgo_osx64 but no window appears. The process can be observed in the activity manager of macOS. Using 10.15.4, latest Steam and installed all updates of CS GO.

Found solution on steamcommunity that worked for me Go to local files (steamapps > common > Counter-Strike Global Offensive > cs go) and delete folder "sound", then restart Steam app.

Uninstalling/reinstalling Steam worked for me

stephanebruckert avatar May 03 '20 00:05 stephanebruckert

I've first added "-fullscreen -autoconfig -dxlevel 90" on launch properties by following the recommendations here: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?p_faqid=772

it works for me on a MacBook pro with latest Catalina updates.

Can anybody confirm this? No posted solution worked for me.

deleting sound folder worked for me but fps wasn't good enough. So I chose bootcamp. But that was also tricky. It was freezing mid game which this thread helped me with.

Also if you are playing on a macbook and you have an extra monitor connected, the game might sometimes not start. The solution for me is to unplug the monitor once before running the game. Then the monitor can be plugged back in again

stephanebruckert avatar May 04 '20 08:05 stephanebruckert

My solution is define native resolution. I,ve using a scaling resulution, but after turn to default screen system resolution all works fine.

AdsonCicilioti avatar May 10 '20 14:05 AdsonCicilioti

I tried all the solutions mentioned above but still having no luck starting the game. I have an external monitor and other games work fine.

Same here...

julianheusel avatar Jun 02 '20 11:06 julianheusel

Have you also tried starting the mac and run the game without monitor?

Unfortunately I don't have the option to try that at the moment...

The issue probably is caused by MKL library, and specific flag must be set to 5, using the guide that I linked: MKL_DEBUG_CPU_TYPE=5

Not have an any clue why it's needed on real iMacs though, and not every macOS crash report here is from person running Ryzen-based Hackintosh...

I can confirm that the command specified in step 4 in the #2539 link above does work with an AMD Ryzen-based Hackintosh that has macOS 11.2.2 Big Sur, I didn't need to enter my admin password but had to restart to take effect. CS:GO takes a while to load however. Specs are as follows: Ryzen 5 3600 ASUS B450M TUF PRO GAMING MSI RX 5700 XT Evoke HyperX Predator RGB RAM 8x2GB 3200MHz (OC'd to 3600MHz) WD SN550 500GB (Mac boot drive) 2x Kingston A2000 1TB Corsair RM850 PSU

Found out the clue: just patch ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Counter-Strike Global Offensive/bin/osx64/libphonon.dylib with AMDFriend by Nyaomi:

sudo amdfriend --in-place --sign --directories /Users/tomnic/Library/Application\ Support/Steam/steamapps

It contains the classic MKL Intel check easily fooled replacing the function with a return 1, MKL debug variable no more working.

You can find info to install AMDFriend here: https://www.macos86.it/topic/5602-amd-amdfriend-for-almost-all-of-your-library-patching-needs/
