For me, this occurs whenever a proton VR game crashes; SteamVR will then show the error until the system is fully restarted (killing all wine processes and restarting steam has no effect)

This started happening to me as well, regardless of wether i start steamvr on its own or with ALVR. i cant recall any changes ive made to my arch install that would cause any issue with steamvr, but here we are OS: Arch Linux x86_64 Kernel: 6.13.6-arch1-1 DE: Plasma 6.3.3 [KF 6.11.0] [Qt 6.8.2] (wayland) WM: kwin_wayland_wr CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D (16) @ 3.6GHz GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER

I got this error, I recommend looking for a rogue vrserver process, e.g. using ps -aux | grep vrserver and killing it if one exists, that fixed it for me.

Interesting, i'll check if this works next time it crashes
