[BUG] PC freezes when starting SteamVR while having more than one monitor

Open Draic opened this issue 5 years ago • 6 comments

Describe the bug PC freezes when starting SteamVR while having multiple monitors active. Starts without issues when disabling all monitors but one.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Enable second monitor in nvidia-settings to expand desktop
  2. start SteamVR
  3. System will be unresponsive. Headset does start (green light, white screens)

Expected behavior SteamVR should start like it does when only a single monitor is used

System Information (please complete the following information):

  • Distribution: Manjaro
  • SteamVR version: 1.12.2 beta (1.11 had the same issue)
  • Steam client version: 1588299357
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: Yes
  • Graphics driver version: Nvidia 440.82
  • Gist for SteamVR System Information: https://gist.github.com/Draic/f97dc1b2a996a8223cc2813da94e101c

Additional context When I first tried out my Index, I could start SteamVR once with multiple monitors, but second start would result in freeze like described above. Now the freeze also happens on first startup.

I'm on AMD, and I sometimes see this issue as well, albeit very seldom.

Having the exact same issue.

PC will freeze if I start steamvr with 2 monitors connected. During the "freeze" I can see the headset trying to display stuff but will ultimately freeze as well. Then if I disconnect 1 of the monitor I can start steamvr with no issue.

I am using Manjaro as well with all the same versions as @Draic.

Okay, so I paid like $999 for the hardware and now I have to wait MORE than a year for someone to at least estimate the fix ETA for this?

I used to have this bug on Ubuntu and then I switched to Manjaro. This bug does not occures anymore. Maybe it is fixed by a newer kernel or mesa version.

Lol, November 2021 and steam on linux still just crashes during gameplay. No wonder nobody wants to buy those things.

What desktop environments are you all using? I'm using i3 and have never had an issue with two monitors.
