Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Everyone that gets a Steam Deck will at some point have to figure out a way to get files to and from it. This usually means enabling SSH, installing something like warpinator or KDE connect, or using SD cards or flash drives to do it.

It seems to me that this could be simpler. USB file transfer could be accomplished using MTP. This is how Android does it, and it can be implemented on other Linux devices as well.

Unless, of course, the USB controller doesn't support gadget mode, in which case this can be closed.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Connect Steam Deck to PC with a USB cable.
  2. This is where it would ask you if you want to allow access.
  3. I'm thinking /home/deck and maybe the SD card should be accessible by default.

An easier way of transferring files would be nice. Currently have to use Warpinator across devices, which is fine and fast, but a wired method would be nicer.

One option would be for Valve to offer a small amount of file storage on Steam. We already in a sense have that, with games saves and screenshots, but perhaps a small amount of storage like say, 1GB, could be made available as a place to upload files onto from a regular desktop PC, and download while on the Steam Deck, so everything can be done through the SteamOS UI. Or perhaps a file transfer function built into Steam itself to transfer files across a network.

I know that this repo: https://github.com/dafta/DeckMTP allows for MTP transfer. Would this help?
