Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
No sound after latest SteamOS beta update I had to manually upgrade the system after a a graphical boot-loop with https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamOS/wiki/Troubleshooting#manually-upgrading. I do not have sound half the time. By selecting the right device in desktop mode and trying a youtube video to confirm, I can close the browser (pulse is weird about applications "stealing sound", so you have to close the browser), I was then able to hook into the sound system.
This is very* similar to my old issue from ages ago:

GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080 Internal Sound Card and Port: HDA Nvidia
Possible it's related to a known issue with NVIDIA drivers and HDMI though I'm a bit confused. Are you using sound from your monitor speakers or via the onboard sound card?

Is there any update on this? I have the same issue and need restarting the lightdm manually to enable hdmi audio.
Edit: I'm wondering whether this could be because of the nvidia driver as per this issue. Upgrading driver can help, but it requires upgrading the kernel, which I'm not sure it's possible if SteamOS has custom stuff and might break.
Edit 2: According to this, It looks like the issue is because of the fact that pulseaudio needs to be ready after lightdm, so it needs to wait for pulseaudio to load first.
