External monitor unsupported video signal in gaming mode, works in desktop mode. Safe mode doesn't work. Need to be able to manually select a resolution/refresh.

If I connect an hdmi cable directly from the dock to the TV it will work with external display safe mode (and also the native resolution of the 720p TV). Except the blacks are crushed in both gaming and desktop mode due to limited expected vs full range output mismatch.

If I connect an hdmi adapter cable directly from the dock to the TV's VGA port, it will work in desktop mode. Black levels seem OK so the adapter seems to be converting, or the TV is working properly with it as VGA is supposed to be a full range input.

In gaming mode however with the same cable, I can't get it to work at all. External display safe mode doesn't work, force composite doesn't work, etc. The TV says "unsupported video signal" as opposed to "no video signal". This means it is receiving the wrong resolution and refresh rate. What I need is to be able to simply have the steam deck screen stay ON so I can go into display mode settings and hopefully select a good resolution/refresh rate.

I CAN'T DO THIS if the steam deck turns off the display in gaming mode when connected to an external display!!

In desktop mode the internal display is the primary and stays on unless it is manually forced off.
