Kids Desktop Mode (Suggestion)
Description: The inclusion of the SteamOS Desktop Mode is fantastic. I think the desktop mode can be improved with a kids mode that allows kids to explore desktop mode without breaking or installing anything. This would greatly extend use cases for Steam hardware in family settings.
Proposal: Introduce a kids desktop mode that allows parents to safely grant desktop functionality. Kids would be able to browse the internet, watch videos, and launch or install whitelisted programs. Anything beyond whitelisted programs would require parents add it to the whitelist.
Key Features Suggested:
- Simplified user account with no sudo rights.
- Allow kids to browse, watch media, and use approved apps.
- Educational and creative apps bundle
- Provide a whitelist-based app launcher managed by parents.
- Require parental approval for adding software to the whitelist.
- System tools hidden by default.
- Downloads blocked unless from whitelisted domains.
- Maintain integration with the existing Steam Families for a unified experience.
- Time limits and schedules (daily, weekly, or bedtime mode).
- Usage reports and parental notifications for app usage and screen time.
- Easy recovery/reset option to clear configuration while preserving saved media.
- Local network isolation to prevent access to other household computers.
Use Case: Families using Steam Decks or other Steam hardware as shared systems could allow younger users to explore Desktop Mode safely. This reduces the risk of accidental system modification and broadens SteamOS’s appeal as a secure, multi-user platform.
Impact: Adds a true “family-friendly” layer to SteamOS.
