[oled]: No sound through speakers and 3.5mm jack

Your system information

  • Steam client version: 1757452101
  • SteamOS version: 3.7.13
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: [Yes/No] No
  • Opted into SteamOS beta?: [Yes/No] No
  • Have you checked for updates in Settings > System?: [Yes/No] Yes

Steam Deck OLED was playing sound fine one moment. Handed it off to someone, then it started producing a 50Hz buzz. Rebooted the Steam Deck. Next day, does not produce any sound.

Desktop mode Troubleshooting

  • Opened Sound settings. Found that the filter chain sink was selected and enabled, no sound was playing.
  • Tested with wired headset, no sound. Did not recognise that a headset was plugged in. But filter chain sink still existed.
  • Tested with a wireless headset, seems to produce sound. Not the best option given the latency, but something I can live with.
  • Tested factory reset. It did not help. The haptics are working but the speakers don't.
  • Desktop mode no longer shows the filter chain sink as available. The Game mode sound settings have Default and External Device, which are not what I need.

Ever found and tried this workaround posted here?

That workaround relies on the device being recognised. It is not in my case.

There's no reliable way to tell if this is a software fault, hardware failure or a combination of both.

I contacted Steam Support; they RMAd the Steam Deck.
