SteamDeck randomly wakes by itself again
Your system information
- Steam client version: 1751317518
- SteamOS version: 3.7.8
- Opted into Steam client beta?: No
- Opted into SteamOS beta?: No
- Have you checked for updates in Settings > System?: Yes
Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:
Press sleep button before I got to sleep while genshin was running, deck plays sleep animation. Deck was still asleep. Put it in my bag. Come to work. I find out the deck decides to wake up after hear sounds coming out of it. Deck is very hot from sitting inside case with maximum brightness despite the power setting to dim the screen after 1 min later. Screen was showing the steam's quick menu that appears on left side. Press sleep button, deck plays sleep animation. 1 min later, deck decides to wakeup on its own.
Steps for reproducing this issue:
As listed above. This has happened randomly multiple times on two different steam decks. Now, I set the standby timer to 5 mins to reduce any possible hardware damages. Check all Bluetooth devices that are paired to steam deck, that could wake up deck. All devices settings to wake up deck are set to OFF.
Steam profile for report system logs: https://steamcommunity.com/id/10yearsjoint/ Steam deck was never opened up at this time of writing.
Question for Valve, can this be hardware issue?
Hi, I have the same issue, I also suspect if SD is not waken by Bluetooth device since Valve recently fixed this.
similar to my problem: device: ROG Ally - steamOS beta candidate 20250826.1 procedure:
- press power button while plugged in
expected:
- device going to sleep
actual result:
- after 5-10s, device auto wake up
note:
- only happens if the device is plugged in
This is happening to me after the latest update. I will put the SD to sleep and it randomly wakes itself up. It's not instance. It's not running the maintenance in the background. There are no bluetooth devices. There is no SD card installed. There is no game running. After a clean restart if I use the power button or menu to put it to sleep, it will sleep for approx 5min and then wakes itself up.
Same here. Updated to Stable yesterday, and I am experiencing the same issue. Playing Silksong, and whenever I press the power button to sleep, it wakes up around a minute or two later.
With or without SD card doesn't matter. I have Buds 2 Pro headsets as a Bluetooth device registered, but not connected. I had WiFi turned on.
Issue only occurred after updating to stable yesterday. I'm not sure why this happened.
For additional info, I did a bit of tests and I had the Steam Deck LCD laying down on my bed after pressing the power button. It just wakes up by itself without any movement whatsoever.
UPDATE: I tried sleeping via menu, and same thing happens. I also tried sleeping while no game is going on (aka. home screen) and it still wakes up. Switched to beta channel and this still happens.
If you are still running into this, can you do the following:
- Wait for the steamdeck to wake up unexpectedly
- Go to Settings->System->Create System Report
- Submit the report to steam support
- Send me your steam username
The report must be submitted directly after the wakeup happens. It only tracks wakeup information for the most recent wakeup event.

I've submitted a report. Hope that you find it useful. Here's my steam profile.
my current experiences with the latests Steam Deck (steamOS 3.7.15) sleep wake-up issue are:
- when the Steam Deck is docked (original Steam Deck Dockingstation as well as a generic USB-C Dock - nothing connected e.g. Ethernet, USB-Devices, even HDMI - except (the passed-through) original Steam Deck USB-C power-brick ) wake-up issues are occuring
- when the Steam Deck is (not docked) and hence powered by a directly connected, original Steam Deck USB-C power-brick, wake-up issues are NOT occuring
side-note to the following specific state:
- when the Steam Deck is initially plugged directly to a (original Steam Deck) USB-C power-brick and is sent to sleep, then even it is afterwards turned on deliberately by pressing the power button, gets plugged into the Dockingstation (powered passed-through) and is sent to sleep mode again - no wake-up issue seem to be occuring
- only after then - when the Steam Deck has been (initially) powered/connected to a Dockingstation gets turned on deliberately and is sent to sleep mode wake-up issues are re-occuring
I am running a ROG Ally X with the latest Main release and am getting the same issue. I have upgraded the SSD to be a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB and have an SD Card in my device but it's not formatted for Steam to use. I submitted a system report, my Steam username is also Firrae.
I have tried the following:
- Plugged in with ethernet and power, press power button, it goes to sleep and then almost immediately wakes back up
- Plugged in with ethernet and power, power menu sleep option, it goes to sleep and then almost immediately wakes back up
- Power plugged in, press power button, it goes to sleep and then almost immediately wakes back up
- Power plugged in, power menu sleep option, it goes to sleep and then almost immediately wakes back up
- On battery, press power button, it goes to sleep and then a few seconds later wakes back up
- On battery, power menu sleep option, it goes to sleep and then few seconds later wakes back up
I also tried the above situations with and without the SD card to the same outcomes. If you want me to test specific cases and submit reports please just let me know.
@firrae Thanks for the info. Github doesn't let me move comments, but your issue is probably related to this topic instead: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/SteamOS/issues/2119
@lostgoat thanks for pointing me to that, I'll copy my comment there.
@hecksadecimal some data from your system report:
Command: cat '/sys/power/pm_wakeup_irq' || true
28
This tells us it was irq 28 that triggered the wakeup. That maps to:
28: 5 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 PCI-MSI-0000:00:08.1 0-edge PCIe PME
And that maps to one of these devices:
+-08.1-[04]--+-00.0 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] VanGogh [AMD Custom GPU 0405] [1002:163f]
| +-00.1 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Rembrandt Radeon High Definition Audio Controller [1002:1640]
| +-00.2 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] Family 19h PSP/CCP [1022:1649]
| +-00.3 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] VanGogh USB2 [1022:162c]
| +-00.4 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] VanGogh USB1 [1022:163b]
| \-00.5 Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD] ACP/ACP3X/ACP6x Audio Coprocessor [1022:15e2]
Out of those devices, it is usually USB devices that trigger wakeup events. The Audio/GPU nodes don't really send these type of events.
A little bit of reading the tea leaves next, but it looks like usb device 3-5 is the one with the most recent wakeup_sources event, even though it didn't actually increase the wakeup_count.
3-5 10 10 0 0 0 0 0 41570706 0
And then checking what that device would be:

We can see that it is owned by the btusb driver. So one of the guesses is that it is the BT adapter that is causing these wakeups.
Can you try going into Settings->Bluetooth and turning off bluetooth and letting me know if that stops the issues?
Sorry, I tagged the wrong person above. That data was from @hecksadecimal 's system report.
@christiansam If you upload a system report I can take a look at the same data for your unit. Make sure to upload it right after you see the undesired wakeup event.

The issue is extremely sporadic for me, so I'm going to give it a couple of days with bluetooth turned off and report back later. I usually find that in the middle of the night my unit has woken up, so I'll know for certain after then.
Btw: something off-topic but maybe related.
I've noticed the time-interval settings, regarding when the System is sent to sleep after a certain amount of inactivity seem to have changed.
Steam Deck (Gaming-Mode, not Desktop) > Settings -> Power
when powered by AC (sorry, don't know how this is called exactly with an english UI)
- The default value was as far as i remember: 1h
- with the latests Steam Client / SteamOS Version installed: the highest value now available is: 20min
I've changed that setting to 20min on my device now,
- because with the "non-existing/non-valid" value 1h my device didn't return to sleep mode when one of the wake-up events has occured
- strangley, this had even affacted the screen power-off settings: With the previous 1h sleep timer active, the screen also never did re-enter a power-off and so was always on. (actually i wouldn't have noticed the sleep wake-up issues at all with the screen powered-off)
@lostgoat
After letting my Steam Deck sit for a couple days with Bluetooth disabled, it hasn't woken itself back up again.
@hecksadecimal do you have any BT devices paired to your deck?
A bluetooth headset and a mouse, but both of them were turned off while this problem was happening.
When you have a chance, can you go to your bluetooth settings and select those paired devices. A menu should pop up with options for each one of them. Can you let me know if the "Allow Wake Up" option is enabled for either of them:
The default for any non-controller device should be to default to "off". I'm curious if that may be misbehaving and one of devices defaulted to "on" for some reason.
They both have that option disabled already.
@hecksadecimal can you let us know what devices they are? We'd like to buy some of them to try to debug further locally.
@lostgoat Certainly.
- Skullcandy Crusher ANC 2 Headset
- ProtoArc EM11 Ergonomic Mouse
Same issue here with the latest SteamOS Stable version. I disabled the "Allow this Device to wake Steam Deck" option in all my connected devices, but my Deck (LCD Model) keeps turning on randomly by itself. Turning off Bluetooth altogether seems to "fix" the issue, but... if i forgot to turn it off when i don't need it, high chances that the Deck will turn on again... which is a very bad thing to happen when it’s in a bag, heating up and draining the battery. Hope it gets fixed soon.
@hecksadecimal could you try forgetting your devices and then re-pairing them under Settings->Bluetooth?
Let me know if that makes a difference. If it does it means this problem will happen for devices that were paired with a deck before the 3.7.15 update.
@lostgoat Okay, I've done that and I'll report back results in a day or two.
This actually happened to me this weekend too. I took a trip with my SteamDeck, Notably, none of my BT devices that are normally connected (controllers, etc.) were with me. I was staying at a hotel in Vegas, so not sure what other devices were around at the time.
It woke up from sleep at exactly 8:45a. I put it back to sleep, and it woke up at 8:50a. I started looking on my phone about the issue, and found this thread. It woke up at 9:00a and I was able to create the System Report as indicated (see attached).
I did turn off Bluetooth, and it did not wake up from sleep unexpectedly after that point. Hopefully this report helps as well.
In general: Since i've changed the inactivity timer value (see below) sleep wake-ups do only occure sporadic.
But because they still do occur and the last wake-up just happend to be right now and i did generate a system-report:

@lostgoat Unfortunately, this did not fix it.
As mentioned already in #1818, an option to disable this behavior globally for all Bluetooth devices, enabled by default, would be much appreciated.
I just made a new discovery- every single Bluetooth device that was paired to my Steam Deck was completely powered off. And yet I grabbed my phone off my nightstand this morning and started using it, and about 2 minutes later, my Deck woke right up. (It's an iPhone) My phone isn't paired to it in any way. I tried to reproduce it again, but I wasn't able to. Is it possible the Deck could be responding to certain Bluetooth signals, even if devices aren't paired to it?
Edit: I've just read lostgoat's thread about the system reports, I unfortunately was too late to grab one of this obscure issue. The next time it happens I'll be sure to generate one.
Edit 2: The only other possible thing I could think of, is that my phone sent a signal to my AirPods to check on something (even though the AirPods case was clsoed, Apple likes to employ "smart" features like that I guess), and since my AirPods are paired to the deck, maybe that could have done something. However no device was displaying as connected on the Deck when I checked.
