Deck OS update 3.7.8 - volume now jumps to max. when plugging in and pulling out headphones

Open tracem186 opened this issue 6 months ago • 3 comments

Your system information

  • Steam client version: 1748914100
  • SteamOS version: 3.7.8
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: [Yes/No] No
  • Opted into SteamOS beta?: [Yes/No] No
  • Have you checked for updates in Settings > System?: [Yes/No] Yes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Volume usually stays stable when plugging in and unplugging headphones, but since update 3.7.8 the volume now jumps to maximum when using the headphone jack. Note - once I turn it down, it stays at the chosen volume, but then jumps back to maximum when unplugging/plugging in again. Happens every time since the update with no exceptions.

I rolled back to the previous update and the volume was stable when plugging and unplugging headphones again (as it has been with all previous updates I've experienced), but on the next restart my Deck reverted back to the recent update and the issue was once again present.

Steps for reproducing this issue:

  1. Plug in headphones - volume jumps to maximum. Turn it down to acceptable level to play.
  2. Unplug headphones - volume jumps to maximum again. Turn it down to acceptable level.

I saw someone post this. Give it a try:

Go to Desktop mode, open Konsole app and use this command: alsamixer

This will give you an internal global volume slider, it’s a GUI so just click at the top of the bar to raise it to 100%. Press the “B” button on your Deck to ‘Escape’, close Konsole, reboot

There was also this post which they only did this: If that doesn't help try this, same app, mute and unmute all outputs by pressing M.

Exact same problem here. Most annoying bug you could imagine.

Just found I'm having the same problem on 3.7.8. Additionally for some reason the default audio device is reset on every boot (may need to open a separate issue).

There has to be a setting like Nintendo Switch: "Reduce Volume to minimum when plugging or removing earphones"

Try this, goto desktop mode, open Konsole app:

rm -rf ~/.config/pipewire

rm -rf ~/.config/wireplumber

rm -rf ~/.local/state/wireplumber

rm -rf ~/.config/pulse

systemctl --user daemon-reexec

systemctl --user restart pipewire pipewire-pulse wireplumber

Reboot

Thanks for the help, but sadly it didn't work as the issue still persist 😞

In any case, it would be nice to have a system option "mute when headphones are disconnected" and "lower max headphone volume"

These are particularly helpful for kids

Seconding that this is still happening on 3.7.13 (client version 1751405894, OLED Deck) and did not happen prior to 3.7.8. Issue does not occur when booting with the prior Stable version. I'm glad there's nobody around to hear it when it spikes to max volume, because it'd be pretty obnoxious...

A workaround described here seems to be working.

TL;DR: Switch to desktop mode, connect headphones, go to sound settings and set "Headphones, Internal Mic, Speaker" sequence in the dropdown.

Can confirm this issue still exists. 0% on the deck, plug headphones in and they go to 100%, then unplug the headphones and the deck is now at 100%.

I attempted the fix @Spmart posted, but It did not work for me.

That did actually work for me! It was set to "Headphones, Headset, Speaker" before

Thanks for this. Really annoying bug. Hopefully we get a resolution soon.
