Legion Go S Extreme - 15W TDP limit under 20% battery
On the Legion Go S Extreme, there is an issue where the TDP is limited to 15W or lower when the battery level drops below 20%. This limitation also exists on Windows, suggesting that it is enforced at the EC (Embedded Controller) level by Lenovo.
Would it be possible for Valve to work with Lenovo to provide a BIOS option or update that removes this limitation in SteamOS?
A TDP limit at 20% battery is too early. It would be better if the limit started at around 10%, or if the cap was set to 18W instead of 15W. The performance difference between 15W and 18W is quite significant, and the current restriction causes noticeable usability issues.
Additionally, even when the charger is connected, the 15W limit is not removed unless the battery level rises above 21%. This behavior seems problematic. TDP limits should not apply when the device is plugged in, regardless of the battery percentage.
Hello @dj5927, this feedback should be directed at the hardware vendor.
Below 20% the battery voltage dips substantially, meaning that there's a chance the battery can no longer output the required wattage to keep the hardware powered, causing a random shutdown. It makes sense for Lenovo to limit the wattage for this reason.
