Rog Ally X - The controls stop working after a few minutes

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible: I did a clean installation of SteamOS 3.7.8 (official release) on my ASUS ROG Ally X. Once the OS boots up, the controls work for a couple of minutes and then become unresponsive. Interestingly, while the buttons are still working, there is one button that doesn't respond — the one that opens the floating performance and system settings menu. However, once the other buttons stop responding, only two buttons continue to work: the one that opens the floating settings menu and the Steam button. This happens every time I reboot, and the buttons only function for a maximum of 5 minutes before becoming unresponsive.
Steps for reproducing this issue:
- I power on the console (ASUS ROG Ally X).
- The controls (buttons) work normally for about 5 minutes.
- After those 5 minutes, the buttons stop responding until I reboot the console.
- Sometimes, even after a reboot, the issue persists and the buttons still don't work.
I'm submitting this report because I am a content creator and I've spent hours trying to find a solution to share with my channel followers.

The kernel patches for the ROG Ally X are slightly out of date in linux-neptune-611 and the controller not working properly is likely a result of that
Same issue with me
same here anyone found a fix/work around yet?
I don't think we'll have a solution until Valve releases an update, hopefully it comes soon.
I can confirm I am also experiencing this issue. At first I thought setting the controller's " Idle time out" to never would fix it, but no luck.
Same - Can confirm this exists with 3.7.7 and 3.7.8.
Sadly I can confirm that nothing will fix this until Valve does.
I've tried using a Decky plugin called Decky Plumber to change InputPlumber's mode to Xbox/Xbox Elite. I'd pretty much consider that the nuclear option. It actually made the problem worse and now I don't even get the five minute window upon boot that the controller functions. It's totally dead.
same here.
The same 😭
I am also experiencing the same problem on my ally x. 5 minutes of working, then nothing.
This is also happening to me
Same issue 🙈
Same situation on my Ally X. Almost all buttons buttons are working (except the right floating menu) for a couple of minutes, then only touchscreen and both floating menu buttons are OK.... Too bad, I've been waiting for this release since the first Ally model came out....
Same issue, exact same behavior, reported in the issue
Same! Hopefully this gets fixed soon…
Same here. Uninstalled Bazzite because I'd rather use a "official" OS and I saw the ROG Ally mentioned on the patch notes for 3.7.8... Very frustrating. Tested on 3.7.8 and 3.8.
Facing the same issue here. I too have Rog Ally X. Issue is exactly as described here. Hopefully we get an official update soon. At the current state the Rog Ally X is unusable.
Installed today and have the same issue (Ally X). Seems to be time based. I also observed that at times it will also replicate as a "sticky button" where it will hold down the last directional (even after sleeping) until you restart. If I launch a game it seems to force restart after a time.
Same issue for me, as described by OP.
Same issue for me, tried different trains with no effect and controller doesn't work for long
Same, installed last night on my Ally X and the controller keeps going off and sometimes the system restarts. Any workaround?
Valve, please fix this issue as soon as possible.
Valve, please fix this issue as soon as possible.
It's the weekend. I wouldn't expect a fix until Monday night at the very earliest. Being realistic, this could be a two-week issue.
My suggestion is if you need this fixed now I would try to get bazzite installed. I went towards that route for now. Very similar to SteamOS!
I was using bazzite and installed steam os to try it. It also seems to have very poor power management.

Same problem for me, but I lose gamepad input after 10-30 seconds or so, doesn't last anywhere near the 5 minutes I see others saying here.
If there are two partitions like on the Deck, why not boot into the other OS partition until this is resolved?
Many people rushed in and thought full support was given and may have replaced windows with steam os. Tbh I don’t really care for having windows on this particular device so I only use bazzite.
Also having the same issue on my Ally X, losing controls after a few seconds. The install process was great and it seems to run well otherwise, so hopefully this can be fixed quickly.
I'm on CachyOS Handheld and it also happens to me. It's something that has to do with the Steam client or with Steamos-manager.
When my system boots, it gives an error in Steamos-manager that inputplumber failed to get the device names.
