Bluetooth not turning off. Turning on paired multi-point Bluetooth devices wakes SteamDeck and keeps it awake

Open C0ZM opened this issue 10 months ago • 10 comments

Your system information

  • Steam client version: 1739497777
  • SteamOS version: 3.6.21 Build: 20241212.1
  • Opted into Steam client beta?: [Yes]
  • Opted into SteamOS beta?: [Yes]
  • Have you checked for updates in Settings > System?: [Yes]
  • (The problem started in the regular version so I switched to beta hoping for a fix. The same problem persists)

Please describe your issue in as much detail as possible:

Expectation: Bluetooth devices should not wake the SteamDeck after being disconnected in UI, when Bluetooth is disabled in UI or when "Allow this device to wake Steam Deck" is disabled.

Reality: Turning off/on paired multi-point Bluetooth headphones wakes the SteamDeck even when the device has been disconnected in the UI and when Bluetooth has been turned off. This happens in both desktop and gaming mode and when "Allow this device to wake Steam Deck" is disabled.

Headphones Google Pixel Buds Pro 1 with multi-point connected to phone and SteamDeck

Steps for reproducing this issue:

Wakes SteamDeck when turning headphones on (desktop mode):

  1. Pair/connect multi-point Bluetooth headphones to SteamDeck
  2. Disconnect the headphones in the UI
  3. Disable Bluetooth in the UI
  4. Put SteamDeck to sleep
  5. Turn off headphones/put in case
  6. Turn on headphones/take out of case
  7. SteamDeck wakes up and stays awake trying to connect to headphones

Wakes SteamDeck when turning headphones off (desktop mode):

  1. Pair/connect multi-point Bluetooth headphones to SteamDeck
  2. Disable Bluetooth in the UI
  3. Put SteamDeck to sleep
  4. Turn off headphones/put in case
  5. SteamDeck wakes up and stays awake trying to connect to headphones

I'd really like to find documentation on how this Bluetooth slider in the Steam client affects the actual Bluetooth state of the device. It does something different than turning it off normally in KDE settings does.

Adding to this that for the LCD model in 3.7.8 this is happening for me for normal Bluetooth devices as well (non multi-point). Disabling Bluetooth works to mitigate this for me though.

Adding some info to the issue of Bluetooth devices waking up the Deck:

On my LCD Deck, as of the 3.7.8 update, my Bluetooth headphones with multipoint support wakes up the Deck anytime I open the case. Most confoundingly, this headphone does not even advertise support for the WakeAllowed flag, BlueZ discards attempts to set it, and yet it still wakes up the Deck!

Additionally, like issue #1926, even on my "singlepoint" peripherals that do have WakeAllowed support, turning off this flag either through Big Picture mode settings or through BlueZ makes no difference, and my keyboard still wakes up the Deck!

According to https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1675200/view/529850584204838038 it was disabled in 3.7.13

But after a recent update, it enabled again. Currently, I have installed OS Version 3.7.15, Steam Version 1759461205

I'm also having issues where the device will randomly wake from sleep mode when I open my AirPods case, turn on a Bluetooth keyboard, or something else that was previously paired to the deck. I may open a new report when I have the time to test it more, but it's pretty problematic when the device is in a confined space and the fans start going. For now, I just remember to disable Bluetooth before I put the system to sleep.

No needs, it's in the official patch notes https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1675200/view/498333631688737191

This time, there's an option to disable it https://steamcommunity.com/app/1675200/eventcomments/603042323028480628?snr=1_2108_9__2107&ctp=3#c603042323028537207

It's a per-device toggle

Although, it looks impossible to disable it globally, so headphones could still trigger wake-up https://steamcommunity.com/app/1675200/eventcomments/603042323028480628?snr=1_2108_9__2107&ctp=7#c603042706209528748

I need to check

I have that option on all my connected Bluetooth devices, except for any audio devices, such as headphones and speakers. Apple, Sennheiser, JBL, I don't really think the brands matter, but those are the ones I have paired. None of them have the "Allow this device to wake Steam Deck" toggle, despite those devices waking the deck with no way to stop them. A global toggle would certainly be appreciated.

There's a much hotter issue #2019 discussing the same problem.

The per device toggles don't work when set in the Steam Deck. I have ear buds that don't have toggles, keyboards that have toggles, all of them turn on the deck from suspend as soon as they're on even when I have wake on disabled.
