With this new updater I now have the problem it no longer recognizes my NTFS formatted SDCard. |It just shows up as SDo1T and asks me to format it. Also in Desktop it gives me mounting issues. The SDCard can be read perfectly fine on PC, so it's definately not a broken SD Card. It's a Sandisk 1tb microSD that worked perfectly fine before this update.
Steps for reproducing this issue:
- Format SDCard (on PC) in NTFS format
- Add some files (optionally)
- Put SD Card in steamdeck
As another test, I also tried to put the SD-card in a thumb-usb-adapter and connect it via USB-c. This does not allow it to be shown aswell (In Desktop and Gaming mode), so it looks like an NTFS mouting issue independent of the connection method.

External drives formatted with NTFS can be mounted from the desktop if you e.g. click on the "Disks & Devices" icon on the panel and select "Mount and open".
This should work in all SteamOS versions and it does not need changes to the OS. You need to mount the drive manually from the desktop, however. I am aware that there are third-party scripts like the one you mention to mount it automatically.
In Game Mode the only supported file system is ext4.

Actually that does not work anymore with the beta. It now gives the error "in Desktop mode" could not mount device.
Btw, with the automount script, it did work perfectly also in Game mode, so no reason why this should not be the default behaviour in Steamdeck OS.
You should be able to mount the device in Desktop mode, I just verified it, I wonder if there is an interaction with the automount script that you are using ... can you see any error in the journal ?

Well I am now in the process of reformatting my SD-card to Ext4 and uploading (1 TB of data) via SCP though Wifi. Only 6 days left to complete the transfer (sigh)..... If only connecting via USB-c to My PC and then simply uploading via USB, would be an option.
In short: I cannot test / verify anything anymore because I have the feeling, this will not be supported in future versions of SteamOS. So I need to get this transferred asap. 6 Days waiting time is just to much with 1tb of data.....

Right, for Retrodeck I think that it should work fine, it's just Steam that ignores the filesystem. I would need to see a system report in order to understand why it was failing in your case, but since you're converting the card to ext4 it doesn't matter anymore.

If you run sudo journalctl (with no additional options) and check everything what happened around the Aug 01 18:06:59 mark you will see a few more details, but from what you pasted what I can see is:
- The SteamOS automount service refuses to mount the drive because of the filesystem type (this is to be expected).
- The third-party
external-drive-mounttool that you are using also fails. - It looks like the filesystem is damaged or needs to be checked?

Once more, I have never used this third-party external-drive-mount tool so it could also be that the problem is there. Another interesting test would be to disable that tool and see if you can mount the ntfs drive normally from the Desktop, but from what I understand you have already formatted the drive so this is not an option anymore.
Yes, I think the automount tool originally got NTFS as the descriptor instead of NTFS3, which it no longer recognizes. But that is speculation since I didn't progress on fixing this.
On another interesting note, which I remember when it still worked in the previous version of the OS. The automount tool made it possible for the SteamApp in gaming mode to detect the NTFS-card and correctly provided the available space etc. Since NTFS does support permissions, I actually think you are also able to install games on the SDcard the same as with EXT4.
But you are also right, since I already formatted the card to EXT4, I am unable to do more testing. In any-case I do leave this open for steamdeck OS to actually implement automount of NTFS formatted cards. Because there are some good use-cases for it:
- I dualboot the deck (via Clover https://github.com/ryanrudolfoba/SteamDeck-Clover-dualboot ) to have a windows installation that can also use the same SDCard
- Much quicker copying of large files to the SD-card via a PC instead of wifi (via SSH)
Looking at the actual automount script here: https://github.com/scawp/Steam-Deck.Mount-External-Drive you only need to change to original /usr/lib/hwsupport/automount.sh file to include NTFS, because the kernel-drivers are already there.
I hope they can pick this up with the help of this "issue".
