If you try to select text in the console, it will only highlight the entirety of the sentence you are selecting. It will still allow you to select and copy text in the middle of a sentence, but it will not highlight what you have selected, making it difficult to tell what you have selected and are copying.

Pretty sure this is an issue in TF2 as well, always have to select the whole sentence or nothing so it might be a wider Source issue

Highlighting properly works in Source SDK 2006 and 2007, but not 2013, so it somehow broke between then.

I have a pre-SteamPipe version of HL2 from 2012 (runs on Source 2009, build 5132, commonly used by speedrunners) and highlighting works properly there aswell. it's a new bug introduced in Source 2013 (edit: see below).

Edit: The issue is first introduced in Source MP branch (tested using Garry's Mod 13 Beta build from 2012), and late Source 2009 build from June 2011 used by MP games (like TF2), but the SP version of 2009 branch was not affected, and later carried over Source 2013 (SP & MP & TF2 branch)

Highlighting also properly works in Left 4 Dead 1, Left 4 Dead 2, Alien Swarm, SFM, CSGO and Garry's Mod.

and btw highlighting is also broken in Portal 2 and Source 2009 Multiplayer
