Unable to run 32-bit Source 1 Games on macOS 10.15 Catalina

Open TylerADavis opened this issue 6 years ago • 5 comments

As of macOS 10.15 Catalina, macOS no longer supports 32-bit executables. As such, it is currently not possible to play many source 1 games on the latest version of macOS, including Portal, Portal 2, and TF2, and potentially others.

I know that CS:GO has been updated to use a 64-bit client on Linux and Mac, is this something that would be feasible for these other games as well?

There is currently no indication on the store pages for these games that they won't work on 10.15, and there is no user facing error message generated when attempting to open the games (a "preparing to launch portal" window pops up and then disappears, and the game never opens).

Yeah, that's a BIG issue. Most of your games don't run on the latest macOS.

Given the number of unfixed issues I see on this page, I have doubts that Valve is actually maintaining Source-1 games. Whoever is in charge, could you state whether you plan to do something or if this is a "won't fix"? Thank you.

Any chances to has be implemented in near future? CS:GO already runs on Catalina too long, i see no reason not to repeat the success with old games (TF2 for example; it still updates sometimes, but cannot be launched on 10.15+) if engines is same, different only SDK revision.

It's been five years now, and no 64-bit updates have been made to the macOS versions of Valve's titles outside of the legacy version of CS:GO and Dota 2, so it's safe to say that Valve will likely discontinue support for their older macOS games catalog later after Steam stops working on macOS 10.13 and 10.14. Better yet, why not have Valve just delist the macOS versions of their titles altogether.

In otherwords, why not just delist all 32-bit only macOS titles from Steam completely, and just discontinue macOS support from GoldSrc, Source 1 & Source 2 completely.

Also, F*** @kisak-valve from Valve's GitHub pages for trying to make Valve a wannabe member of the ESA (Entertainment Software Accociation) & SSIIA (Software and Information Industry Accosiation), preventing any unofficial patches from being published and labeling them "Instant Copyright Infringement".

Not happening and no longer possible, as Valve had quietly cancelled the 64-bit macOS updates to all their games without any announcement.
