Compatibility Report

  • Name of the game with compatibility issues: Autobahn Raser II
  • Steam AppID of the game: None

System Information

  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT
  • Video driver version: Mesa 25.2.7
  • Kernel version: 6.17.9-300
  • Link to full system information report as Gist: https://gist.github.com/NostalgiaRealm/55f5af4606c22c1662022a4253765ba9
  • Proton version: Proton 7.0-6 work, Proton 8.0-5 and up don't. WINE 8.20 and 10.20 both work

I confirm:

  • [x] that I haven't found an existing compatibility report for this game.
  • [x] that I have checked whether there are updates for my system available.

Logs of me loading the game's main executable with Proton 8.0-5 , which in turn loads the game menu (menu.exe) after skipping the intro. Then, once a track and a car have been selected, the game loads spel.exe which in turn also loads \spelfix\core.dll. This is a fix for the game to run on Windows 2000 and newer (see below)

steam-12889950978572288000.log

Symptoms

The game works correctly with the the earlier described fix using standard Wine via Lutris and also with Proton 7.0-6.

However, when tested with Proton 8.0-5 the in-game music does not load at all. The music files are contained in rcs.img which resides on the CD of the game, even with the CD extracted to a folder and winecfg pointed towards the folder (done using protontricks), it will not load the in-game music.

Autobahn Raser II is a 1999 game developed by Davilex Games (now defunct) that is considered to be abandonware online. The full game disc has been uploaded to archive.org here: <Link removed by moderator> The fix I use to make the game work at all can be found here (Patch Version 2): http://www.lafix.de/archive/abraser/

Reproduction

  1. Get the files from above specified location
  2. Mount the Autobahn Raser II ISO, and execute setup.exe with wine, use the Maximum install option
  3. Install the fix by renaming spel.dat in the game's folder to spel.exe and then copying the fix files over
  4. Open Steam and add a non-Steam game to the list, point it to Autobahn Raser II.exe
  5. Select Proton 8.0-5 as the runner.
  6. Run the game, making sure the ISO is still mounted on your system, or has been extracted to a folder and mounted using winecfg.
  7. In-game, click to skip the menu and press OK on the name prompt (insert a random name if empty)
  8. Click Optionen, Einstellungen and then 3D so the game will use Direct3D mode
  9. Click OK and Zurück, click Sunday Cup and then Start. The game now loads a race
  10. Check with both Proton 7.0-6, and Proton 8.0-5 or higher and notice that the game's music is available in the first but not the latter.

Hello @NostalgiaRealm, a link in your compatibility report was legally problematic and has been removed.

If needed at all: What other way is there to include the files of the game ? I do have the original CD. The game is not available for purchase at a digital marketplace.

Logs of loading and playing the game on Proton 7.0-6 doing the same actions as I did with the previous log in the OP: steam-14807165336591269888.log
