Symptoms
Game Launches, but fails to progress past the title cards.
In the upper left there is a banner that says Welcome to the Half-Life 2 RTX thin with a countdown to when it closes.
It always makes it to 11, pauses briefly, then it goes to 8 then the game hangs.
Tried Proton experimental, hotfix and experimental bleeding edge as well as the latest ge proton release, all present the same problem.
EDIT: Apparently I did not wait long enough. I tried again and after several minutes of being frozen the game did eventually load. It's not playable on my hardware, but it did load.

About first two seconds of intro video audio can be heard, black screen throughout. Need to kill the game process.
Based on this, just seems like whatever mounting packages is supposed to do just flat out doesn't work.
Seeing same issue on an RTX 5090 with vulkan beta driver 570.123.06 and the 6.13.5 kernel on Cosmic-DE. Here a second or two of game audio then black screen. Have to kill the RTX Bridge process AND HL2 executable process.
Trying to run the game via Gamescope get two dialogs the first tells me the system Failed to create D3D device error 0x8876086A: D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE: This device does not support the queried technique
Then that RTX Remix runtime encountered an issue and will close. For whatever reason the RTX Remix bridge process is falling over.
The game will run on Proton 7.0-6, without Gamescope and the following command switches PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command% am I right in saying NVAPI doesn't do anything with Proton 7.x? However the game is ignoring my 4K resolution and is running at 1080P and will not go full screen and mouse control is utterly borked, so keyboard controls have to be used so it's unplayable. Suspect on a 'real' native 1080P panel the game would work correctly. Shame I can't get gamescope to work for some reason.
I figured out the issue with mouse control and the game going full screen is down to Cosmic. For some reason with this game having any kind of scaling on utterly screws it up.
Game fails to start with Proton 8.0-5, 9.0-3, Experimental and Hotfix
The 3D is not rendering. Everything is grey. The game seems to be running, there is just no graphics. I've got a RTX 3070 Ti.

I've tried with or without launch options: PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 %command% but it's the same.
I've also tried installing HL2 but it doesn't change anything.
Of course, DLSS Frame Generation strikes again 😩
Set your launch options to WINE_DISABLE_HARDWARE_SCHEDULING=1 %command%, that should allow the game to run past the initial black screen on Ada and newer NVIDIA GPUs.
I've switched to proton experimental and it solved my problem. Now, it works.

You sir are an absolute scholar and a gentlemen. Game is now running on Proton Experimental on my rig with everything bar FG. Did have to run Gamescope from the terminal and launch the game from there though. Running gamescope from the game options seems to cause the game to still barf on startup.

I was also getting a black screen until I set "WINE_DISABLE_HARDWARE_SCHEDULING=1 PROTON_ENABLE_NGX_UPDATER= %command%"
It worked afterwards. I had it set somewhere else. (Arch/4080/Vulkan dev 570)

Never worked for me on my RX9070 on Arch (now with Mesa 25.1 from testing, Proton Bleeding-Edge). It hangs at the "Powered by Source" screen or sometimes at the loading screen just before the main menu.
EDIT: Well, an update is out, and now it works. Performance is abysimal, but that was expected on AMD
on a 5080 / Wayland game launches properly with proton 7 but does not allow me to pick any resolution higher than 1080p and there are sparkly blue artifacts in-game. Also DLSS is not an option at all in the Alt+X menu but that might be related to my distro, not sure. Performance is terrible of course, that's to be expected since ray tracing + linux is not good at the moment.
