Peaks fix

Rebased changes from old peaks-fix branch onto new v0.6 branch.

Peaks is still disabled at the plugin level, but I tested it and it is fully functional as far as I can tell.

@AndrewBelt Just wanted to see what the status of this PR is in terms of merging. Is there any more work you would like me to do before you can merge this fix in and enable the module?
