Give objects with no sprites the Gamemaker question mark sprite on the room editor. Would make room editing easier. Maybe

Wouldn't like to use GameMaker assets, but having some "this sprite doesnt actually have a sprite, this is just used so you can see it in the editor" does sound useful.
