Paint on model doesnt work

Open mauricekonings-ops opened this issue 1 month ago • 14 comments

Cura Version

5.11.0

Operating System

windows 10

Printer

ender 5 pro with sonic pad

Reproduction steps

  1. import stl file
  2. click on "paint"
  3. paint on model (preferred seam)
  4. nothing shows, not even a dot to paint with.
  5. Reinstalled the 5.11.0 cura

Actual results

Nothing helps

Expected results

I wanted the seam to follow the corner (sharp edge) of the stl model. i cant seem to get the paint option to work. Is there something special i need to do to get paint to work ?

Add your .zip and screenshots here ⬇️

Sorry, no pictures because there is nothing to see. The "paint" doesnt show on the model.

Thanks for the report. I can't duplicate that exact problem. When in the "Prepare" screen, I select the model, and then select the paint tool and it looks like this (already painted that stripe).

Image

The problem I have is that although I painted a seam on the Front of the model, the seam remains on the Right where the setting "Z Seam Alignment" is "User Specified" and "Z Seam Position" is "Right". The paint stripe doesn't seem to override the setting.

The Cura team will take a look.

@wawanbreton ??

That is a known limitation of the current seam painting implementation: as the green area is located on a flat surface, it doesn't contain vertices to place the seam to, and falls back to vertices in the white area.

About the initial issue, I cannot give an explanation either. Log files could help though 🙂

@wawanbreton How do i upload log files ? Then later today i wil try to upload it.

I see that now. @mauricekonings-ops , Set up everything like you did and slice the model. Then use the "Help | Export file for Technical Support" command. That will create a 3mf file with the log and a project file. Zip that 3mf file and post the zip folder here.

Okay, hopefully this is working ?!

Thanks, I properly got your project and log files ! I could see nothing wrong though, I can paint properly on the model and the logs don't show errors related to it. However, I wonder if you are on "PREPARE" view while trying to paint ? The painting cannot be done in the "PREVIEW" view that just displays a transparent version of the model, and the extrusion toolpaths. We changed this behavior a few times because it was confusing, but maybe there is still some information message missing.

I tried to paint in both views. Didnt work. Is there a way to completely uninstall cura, and i mean deep uninstall. But stil save all settings in another folder, so i can set them back ? I updated in the past, but seems that older versions where stil in the same folders. Maybe something went wrong there...

  1. Close all cura versions.
  2. There are two folders that contains the cache and configuration of all cura installations. Make a back up of both before removing them. Previous version configurations is automatically taken when you open a new version, so if you would want a complete clean install remove all the contents after making a backup.

On windows you can find them under %appdata%/cura and %localappdata%/cura

you can paste the paths in the File explorer Image

  1. Open cura
  2. Add a printer
  3. Load a model and test

Thnks for the information, i did all steps but it didnt help. Hopefully in the next update the paint function works for me. I really need to hide the seam in my personally preferred sharpest corner.

mauricekonings-ops avatar Nov 27 '25 07:11 mauricekonings-ops

Hmm, that is really surprising. Could you try to load this file, it contains a very simple cube model with seam painted data on it : painting-basic-test.zip You should normally see this: Image

My guess is a hardware imposed limitation, we're dropping back to openGL 2

2025-11-26 13:45:07,183 - DEBUG - [MainThread] UM.View.GL.OpenGLContext.detectBestOpenGLVersion [191]: Trying OpenGL context 2.0...
2025-11-26 13:45:07,183 - DEBUG - [MainThread] UM.View.GL.OpenGLContext.detectBestOpenGLVersion [198]: We got at least OpenGL context 2.0: 3.3 Compatibility profile

Unfortunately I don't think we have/can test with your hardware configuration (ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series). If anyone else is running similar system configuration, they might be able to chip in.

Correct, I didn't think about that. I can reproduce the issue by forcing Cura to use the OpenGL compatibility mode. We will add a ticket and see if we can provide a fix for the next version.

For internal reference: CURA-12853

Just tested the file from wawanbreton, i open the file and dont see the paint marks. But if i click on the paint option... the painted words (it works) become visible. Stil cant paint it ? I have some other computers, think i try that. But would be so great to use it with my main computer.

Can i change any setting in Cura, to use this oprion ?

Unfortunately not, Cura is falling back to this mode because of hardware limitations. You can force it but it would probably result in the whole 3D view being unusable. So upgrading your hardware or using an other PC is your only option for the moment.
