Portal opening animations

Open DiamondWalker opened this issue 3 years ago • 7 comments

Opening portals is pretty underwhelming for something that represents access to a whole new world. While the music and (formerly) chat messages make it feel a little more special, it's still just clicking on a block with an item to make more blocks. A neat way to give each portal more "personality" would be to give each of them a spawn animation, similar to bosses.

Nether: The portal slowly fades in, similar to that old tardis mod

Barathos: Flame and smoke particles start coming from the bottom of the frame. The amount and height of these particles increases slowly until the entire frame is burning and the portal appears

Creeponia: Smoke fizziles out of the rune of the portal and nothing happens... until a massive jumpscare (and nondamaging) explosion engulfs the frame and the portal appears

Lelyetia: An orange line stretches from one side of the portal to the other in a sin graph shape. This stream slowly evens out, after which the line dissipates as particles get shot up or down and the portal appears

Precasia: The portal appears white, but slowly gains a green tint

Celeve: Several tiny balloons are released inside the frame. Each of these eventually pops and turns into one of the portal blocks

Crystevia: The portal is completely dark at first, but tiny colored lights begin popping up until the entire portal is colored in

Gardencia: Vines spawn at the top of the frame and slowly grow down, eventually turning into the portal

Iromine: Mechanical sounds and smoke periodically come from the rune of power until the portal finally appears

Vox ponds: Thick black smoke comes out of the frame for a while, after which it ends and green potion swirls are left at the bottom. The portal appears after a while

Dustopia: You are completely blinded for 3-5 seconds. The portal is there when you can see again

Greckon: The portal flashes through several joined textures (similar to paintings). These textures include static, faces, ghosts, and other disturbing images

L'Borean: Water starts dripping from the top of the frame. These drops increase in frequency until eventually they turn into rain particles

Runandor: Energy (or particles) spiral in from the frame

Shyrelands: The frame is filled with particles; the upper half cyan and the lower half golden. The dividing line between these two colors begins rotating at increasing speeds, and eventually a firework burst of both colors comes out of the frame, leaving the portal behind

I don't know I kind of like the instant portal opening. It lets me efficiently go between dims. You kind of need the boss spawn animations since certain weapon types have attack speeds/unholster times.

I'm not sure when you'd need to change portals so often, but if you do need to for some reason can't you make 2 or 3 portals?

That would involve getting more than 1 set of carved runes/Ancient rock, along with making room in a base for more than 1 portal. When it comes to playing this mod, sometimes you need items from multiple dims, which means quickly popping into dims and coming back. Something like this would look nice the first few times, but there are sweaty players like me who will see them as time wasters after seeing them several times

It wouldn't take any longer than smelting stuff. That being said, I suppose it could be nice if the teleporter saved the portal and skipped the animation in the future

What do you mean "saved the portal"

What do you mean "saved the portal"

You'd only see each animation once per portal

i kind of want to see an opening animation like a stargate on one of them. i just think it would be cool
