List of standard, convenient file formats and associated tools for maintaining artwork

Open Trilarion opened this issue 3 years ago • 1 comments

Artwork often exists in two forms:

  • one format for storing all the details (layers of a graphic, scores of a piece of music), used for developing
  • one final rendered format like bitmaps of synthesized music, used for distribution

Typically the second form can be recreated from the first and that makes the first form very valuable and for open source gaming it would be really important to have open source formats for both types.

For all kind of artworks (images, music, video) I should compile a list of recommended file formats for both forms and a list of associated tools and maybe also distill some best practices and then apply them when improving open source games.

Maybe I could also make some statistics about what projects currently use.
