Android Auto choppy background audio

Open przemhb opened this issue 3 years ago • 16 comments

First of all - thank you for your great work. It's almost flawless.

Unfortunately when I use Android Auto I get choppy sound from an internet radio app (regardless of the app: TuneIn, Replaio etc.) when it runs in background and a navigation app (G Maps, Waze etc.) works in foreground. This chopping effect gets the more intense the more loaded CPU is with graphic rendering.

Could you fix it?

MZD-AIO 2.8.6, Mazda FW 59.00.502, AA 1.14b.

Removing SD card with navigation helped a lot. CMU's processor wastes its resources for processing navigation in background unless you do so.

Hey @przemhb - would you mind elaborating on your solution? Not sure what you mean by removing SD card with navigation.

I'm facing the same issues on my Mazda3

Just push back the rubber SD card slot cover and push the card to eject it. You may leave it like this or remove it completely. The point is to take away access to navigation maps from the CMU. If you do so the chopping will decrease significantly as the CMU will be no loner processing GPS position and run navigation as a background process (even despite you haven't started the nav purposely).

I encounter the same issue - I believe OP is referring to Google Maps navigation on Android auto, running at the same time as music streaming apps. I've noticed some slight choppiness in a song playing on Spotify when Google maps needs to process something, like a turn or loading a new road.

I agree with that being the same issue I'm having, but I don't have an SD card connected. Am I missing something?

The only storage and processing happening during Android Auto are from the car and my wired phone.

DavidIsrawi avatar Jul 19 '22 05:07 DavidIsrawi

I've ment the car's SD card and the car's navigation. The card is located near the 12V socket, below your right arm. The same place, where USB sockets are located.

yeah same issue here, only way to solve it is to change screen to non maps and just rely on direction banners. i don't have mazda maps sd so that's not an issue

Anyone else find a solution for this? I have taken out my SD card as well but issue still persists. when google maps is open and Spotify is running in the background, audio is choppy and stuttering

booch95 avatar Feb 08 '23 07:02 booch95

Pulling out the SD card that is next to the USB sockets will help, BUT, the processor is really not up to the job on the older Mazdas. It wasn't designed for that and even though it is only drawing the screen while your phone does the calculations, it is not perfect.

What DOES help a lot is using an AA wireless module. At least then your phone is charging from a powerful charger plugged into the 12v port and doesn't go into "conserve power mode" which slows down your phone, the USB ports do not supply enough power to keep your phone happy during navigation AND music.

I don't think mine stutters anymore. It isn't as good as a newer car, but it's pretty good.

Oh one more thing, I only listen to downloaded playlists, albums, and podcasts. Streaming would bring it to it's knees.

@TheyWho Can you let me know which AA wireless module you use? I didn't think they worked with this setup, but I might get one if it works well. Thanks for the info.

Hi guys, I don't develop in mazda tweeks, but I changed some settings on my cell phone, I use waze and what I did was change the map settings, regularly, they are in (Auto) or 3D, I left the settings in 2D and it has worked perfectly for me. Another setting I made was to remove "precise location" for Waze, Android Auto, and Spotify. I use a Samsung galaxy s21 FE in a 2015 Mazda 3

I use AAwireless. https://www.aawireless.io/shop?gclid=Cj0KCQiA6fafBhC1ARIsAIJjL8lAesV3CHBWWj7vbkxqE2ghOzfxecJjxxFIbZUZY9iDQm5nwJIePoMaAvCkEALw_wcB

They AAwireless modules are great.

But the BIGGEST news is that the newest version of Android Auto seems to be MUCH easier on the CPU. This is the version with the split screen.

Also it helps to turn OFF your phone screen after Android Auto starts up The phone screen takes a lot processing power.

Using the AAwireless module allows you to use a high power USB adapter so the processor can run at full speed. Android will use adaptive techniques to conserve power when running on battery power. This can be turned off for your individual audio apps in settings.

Thanks for the info about AAwireless Module and general tips!

But, yes I agree I am liking the latest Android Auto Coolwalk version with split screen. I am guessing it is less choppy in split mode now because it is drawing on less of the screen for the map.

bybybybybyby avatar Feb 28 '23 22:02 bybybybybyby

With the new split-screen Android Auto and using AAwireless with a faster phone (Pixel 7p) I have no more stuttering of any type even while streaming from cell towers as I am driving. I still try to remember to turn off my cell phone screen to reduce load on the phone and to keep it cooler, but it is not necessary.

Edit: The issue for me at least was bluetooth. There appears to be a bug where the audio signal going through USB is interfering with the Bluetooth audio. I tried to uncheck audio (some phones call this media) in bluetooth settings on my phone for the connection only leaving calls, and it made a significant difference. Leaving bluetooth entirely off makes it completely smooth.

~~I went into settings for Google Maps and Waze, and found my battery was set to restricted. I'm going to change it to unrestricted as well as Youtube Music, and see if this helps.~~

Interesting, I had the opposite behaviour. I had spotify and maps in split screen and when connected via USB only it was very choppy, but when I connected Bluetooth to the car it was a lot better. Not sure if my phone screen was on or not, will test some configurations and compare
