Feature request: List of supported systems in GUI

Open elosha opened this issue 1 year ago • 3 comments

Clock Signal can emulate so many different devices, plus that selection really is widespread across computing history. When I launch it, it just requests a image or binary but without any comment. In that moment I'm always confused what I could choose from.

Therefore it would be cool if there was a list of all supported systems which the particular build can emulate, somewhere in its GUI. Possible locations that came to my mind , ordered by difficulty:

  1. A filetype dropdown in Open dialog, containing all systems and their supported filetypes (basically the applied filter, made visible)
  2. Mentioned in About box
  3. Output by a dedicated dialog box inside Help menu
  4. In form of documentation available as Help file

A web link to the project people can find releases and docs would also be helpful.

Thanks for reading and for CLK! 😃

Update: I just found out the File>New dialog is different and lists the systems. It would still be helpful if the list would be visible from Open dialog that appears on launch. 😄

Furthermore, File -> New... doesn't list all emulated systems since e.g. it doesn't make much sense to create one of the consoles — the Atari 2600, Master System or ColecoVision — without media. So possibly a rethink is justified.

@TomHarte This absolutely makes sence. But I guess one might still expect the machine to appear in that list. (Maybe just trigger popup of the Open dialog then?)

In makes sense if you like to drag media into the emulator window.
