I realize this is a very old issue, but the solution is to set the distance to something high enough for your particular ZIP code. Working with the API builder here, distances below 14 would return an empty data set for my zip code. Once I set it to something greater than 14, the plugin started working. Distances for other random ZIP codes could go as low as 3, so it seems very dependent on the area.
