I may have at last found a fix for this. I'm still testing, and it has definitely missed ESXi 8.0.3, but if all goes well it will be available eventually.
A fix is checked into VMware's internal repository and should become available in ESXi 9.0. It's not pushed to github at this time, but could be if that's useful.
