Thanks @dented42 I made a comment over at https://github.com/Jermolene/TiddlyDesktop/issues/117#issuecomment-782027525 explaining why I don't I think the answer here is to entirely disable the menulet for everyone on macOS.

@Jermolene regarding the conversation in #117, when I finish my patch would you prefer I add it to this pull request or would it be better to close this one now and open a new one when the time comes?

Hi @dented42 I'm closing this to clean things up; we can continue to discuss the approach in #117. There is a new prerelease that I'm hoping may help with #224:
