Fixed in 1.4-maint by #9003. Master branch does much less stats and very differently, so this does not apply there.
Not sure how frequent consecutive runs of the same chunk are in practice. I guess there is one "popular" case, when long runs of all-zero ranges get chunked. But guess...

#8332 might "fix" this in master branch, because it does not do checkpointing any more (because there is no need to for the way it works with that PR's code).
