BTW, while working on #7893 I did not experience left-over locks when using Ctrl-C (and not even when I used `kill -9` to kill the client, even in that case...

And it's still broken. Any freebsd user out there who could debug / fix this?
I added the "bug" label to get this better visibility. It doesn't look like a bug in borg though, but rather in freebsd's FUSE implementation.
@Jamie-Landeg-Jones thanks for helping. The "Function not implemented" is only seen on FreeBSD (not on linux, not on macOS) and even on FreeBSD, this has worked before, so I suspect...
