What problem are you trying to solve?

Players without microphones or who for whatever reason can't communicate via voice have been struggling (or causing headaches) by wanting to join in but many players (including myself) are frustrated because they can't take part in private conversations without having the storyteller pass along private messages which distracts from them doing anything else.

Describe the solution you'd like

Wouldn't an easy option be to allow text messages like you can pass to neighbors during private conversations? This would allow people who are non-vocal or have other speech issues to take part in the online game as well as allowing ST both the ability to know what's going on there without having to sit in on the conversations to "translate" by passing along text between the person without microphone access. I think this would be a seemingly common-sense help in several areas including for people with disabilities.
