Improve the experience of large Shift-A menus

Original title by owner (since edited by TheDuckCow): Add an alphabetical index menu of block

  • [ ] - [X] I have checked existing feature requests, and my idea is different

Describe the context

Add an alphabetical index menu of block The menu is too long that hard to find the block name we need image

How do you imagine your feature works?

add a father menu for the block menu. For example:

block/
      A/
        Air
        ...
      B/
        block.scaffolding.hit
        block.scaffolding.step
        ...
      C/
     ...

What existing workaround (or closest thing to a workaround) do you have today (within Blender, MCprep, or any software)? If there is no workaround, explain why you feel this way.

Just making it more useful

The idea of having tree view is something i'm not against because that also exist in the asset browser, But for having it in UI List I'm not so sure why because by default it has a search function and sort alphabet and reverse order.

For making this happen, there is Shapekeys+ addon to look at screenshot

The main problem is that this menu for creating grids is too long and your mouse has to move for a long time. And if you are not careful, the menu will disappear because the mouse moves outside. You can only reopen the menu and find it again. Then accidentally disappeared again (disastrous operational design!)lmaocry image All in all, this place is very difficult to use at the moment

Add an alphabetical index menu could make it better

Or add a menu search looks like the official node menu image

That panel isn't maintained, you're better off using the MCprep panel itself

So I should close this issues (because nobody will use the old menu...why not delete the menu)

I'm going to re-open this - @StandingPadAnimations I wouldn't say it's not maintained, everything is maintained :) And I agree the experience isn't great. Creating a search operator may be a suitable way, but would mean having a secondary popup after the fact or at least some additional research.

Thanks @BUGProtectionAssociation for flagging, it's been acknowledged for some time but indeed we should do something about it, because it's a bit silly to attempt to use. Just be aware I can't promise near-term resolution given everything else we are focussed on.

I was looking at the help chat and remember about this, in Blender 4.0 we should have a search functionality (by default?) for menus now.
